Immigration and the school boards seem to think so. They require HIV tests of us yet foreign prostitutes don't need one.

It's called covering your butt against potential lawsuits.
What are you going to do? Sue a hooker?
Not to mention foreign entertainer isn't just bar girls, but also ones at low risk for risky behavior and AIDs like Lady Gaga...oh wait...crap |

if anyone thinks that the korean media doesn't portray foreigners as aids carrying threats click on link and scroll down to all the articles that preceded the 1988 olympics...

for those too lazy...
Our country is indeed a zone defenseless before AIDS
The highs and lows of a festive atmosphere welcoming the Olympics -' defenseless' before AIDS
The 'defenseless before AIDS' Olympics
maybe foreign english teachers should be demanding required aids testing from any adjoshis they come into contact with at work, be they adult students or hagwan directors?
http://forum.japantoday.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=636842
and might as well have the adult females tested as well, that way we will ALL know that everyone else doesn't have aids. think of the possibilities! it could lead to some real wild parties. |
So how exactly does requiring and AIDs test of someone before they enter the country, cause that person to be considered "AIDs ridden" once they are in said country?
Is a test that is there to screen for bad apples labeling all apples as bad?
If Koreans thought you had AIDs, then how come their behavior towards us in person shows nothing of this?
There is no thread on here about Korean people asking waygooks "Do you have AIDs?" over dinner conversation. There is no thread on here about Korean people hiding their children and calling the police when one walks by a school or playground. I don't have to go door to door telling people I'm a pedophile.
Which is more likely- That based on their actions, Koreans really see is as AIDs ridden pedophiles OR That some people feel that this is true in an effort to establish 'victimhood'? That and that these measures are simply to keep out bad apples and avoid liability rather than part of a smear campaign. |

There were lots of misconceptions about AIDS being penned globally 24 years ago. |

Here you go.
Place "quote" at the start of the quote you wish to include. When finished place "/quote" at the end. But instead of " " use [ ].
(I had to use quotation marks instead of [] because it kept quoting my own post.) |

| Being against multiculturalism isn't necessarily xenophobic.. |
..its just unrealistic.
Especially in a world of globalization. Where mass global transport constantly moves people from one continent to another, and most are learning a single unifiying language.
Which scientist was it again who coined the term "pinko-gray"? (referring to the inevitable future mixed-race world population).
Trying to cling to a single monolithic cultural and ethnic identity is like trying to hold back the sea. |

Fair point for the very, very, very long term view Julius.
However, for now I would like to say that globalization and mass transborder travel are not the same as multiculturalism in the sense of immigration.
One is a form of tourism something mixed in with an influx of foreign labor. The other is a profound social shift fueled by immigration.
The first leads to very little discernable or palpable tension from the "host" nation population while the other (true multi-cultural immigration) often leads to backlash from the "native" population when diversity reaches a certain critical mass and starts to impact local customs and culture. |

^^I think this above story illustrates something else; that we are guests and Koreans are hosts. I don't feel they are hosting me, I'm doing my job, but as a collective group do they actually feel they are my host, like I'm in their house?
Sometimes I'm walking down the street and I get a look that says "show me some respect." And I think why? Because I'm your guest?
I don't know, but the usage of "host" actually bothers me. |
