|
|
Hi,
I have a UK galaxy apollo (a very cheap version in the galaxy range)
all the phone shops ive been to keep saying it cant be used on korean networks, but i have a feeling they are lying so I'll buy a phone.
I tweeted olleh kt a while back and they gave a list of phones and it looks like mine would be compatible.
Is it common for the phone shop guys to lie or am I being paranoid? |

"Supported Frequencies
"The mobile phone must support 3G WCDMA 2100 MHz frequencies. Note that CDMA mobile phones are not compatible, as they are different from WCDMA phones."

According to this link, Korea and the UK use the same frequency for 3G-

My experience is with KT.
I wouldn't be able to prove that they lie, but at the very least they lack knowledge and show very little interest in actually learning about their trade. Case in point, when I went to get my iPhone at the end of November 2010, they had absolutely no idea what tethering was as I was asking about their unlimited data plan. They also had no clue how to change iOS 5 from Korean to English and said that it wasn't possible. I showed them how to do it in store.
Oh, and the "unlimited" data plan is a sham. It has a soft-cap that will result in your speed being throttled. They didn't explain this to me at all when I went in for the phone. I suspect that it was a bit of "not telling the whole truth".
So, in conclusion, I'd say they aren't above lying. |

Samsung GT-i5801 Galaxy Apollo / Galaxy Naos apparently supports UMTS2100, therefore I guess you'd be safe with KT.
Unless you walked into one of official Olleh KT admin/service branches, ordinary phone shops on the street under Olleh banner are mere retailers who are neither interested nor informed enough in using overseas handset in Korea, which gets them no new sales revenue.
Go visit a proper KT admin branch office nearby, they'll sort it out for you. |

Bolded for truth. Visiting a branch office is the way to go. Most retailers won't even call their distributors to attempt to set up overseas phones. Instead most of those guys think it makes them a good salesman to talk you into a new phone (or they're being pressured by their boss). |
