What I'm sure myth at least understands (seems he's been here a long time and knows a lot of koreans personally) is that they rather, ENJOY telling each other that that is the case and PRETENDING to believe it as part of their group bonding act and making themselves feel good about their country which they seem so needful of. Saying it to a foriegner also helps with the old face making... Same as when they'll all sit down to a meal which they all know is mundane such as maybe that burned rice in water dish and one will say it's massisoyo and everyone will cluckingly agree fervently with the assertion to boost the feeling of group unity (Jjeong / noonchi or whatever.)
It's all part and parcel of the Korean group unity (uri nara) dynamic.
