First off, I'm not in the mood to spell check or proofread this so whomever wants to poke fun at my grammar and/or spelling can just have at it.

Ok, here's the deal. My girlfriend and I are looking for work in Busan or Seoul. We are both experienced/certified ESL teachers from the US (she's taught 3 years and I've taught 4). I've also taught ESL in Spain and South Korea so I have international teaching experience. She does not. I'm white. She's Filipino-American.

So, we're asking for:

short work days, evening shift, something like 2-9
2.3+ (I'm thinking 2.3 is the max we'll get)
a decent neighborhood in Busan or Seoul

Do you think our demands are unreasonable?

As always, many thanks in advance!

Sure those demands are reasonable.

It will mean a Hakwon job.

One question: Your gf was born in the US or immigrated there?

Bascially does she have a BA from a US University?

If not, she may have problems getting a teaching visa in Korea.

Yeah, I know the public schools are out but we don't really want long hours. We'd be happier making a little less and having more free time.

Yes, she was born and raised in the US. She's just not white. I keep telling her to stay out of the sun but she won't listen! Laughing

Well then since she has a BA from a US University and is a US citizen...no worries.

Do you guys want to work at the same hakwon? If so I suggest this is made crystal clear to the recruiter(s) if you plan to work with one.

The 2-9 schedule is not unreasonable and would likely be at a children's Hakwon (with middle school students in the early evening and elementary school kids in the afternoon).

Hakwons who deal with adult students will have a split shift type of schedule with something from 7am to 10am and then start agaon from 4pm to 8/9pm.

We did forget to make it clear that to the recruiters that it wasn't necessary that we got a job in the same hakwon. However, after a few emails we did remember to make that clear.

I'm also thinking that we started our job search waaaaaaaaay too early. We started in mid-April but we don't want to arrive in Korea unitl August.

Anway, thanks for the input.

Anyone else? Very Happy

Huh. I never even thought of that. But don't Koreans only get a few days off?

I remember working in Spain it was almost impossible to find work in August but I never expected it to be in issue in South Korea.

Live and learn I guess.

Thanks.

Actually it's better if you don't work at the same hogwon. One of you can ask for the apartment and the other can ask for a housing allowance. Split the housing allowance and you'll earn a bit more.

If you both work at the same place, the owner will try to offer you a slightly bigger apartment (or at least what he TELLS you is larger than normal).

I know at the place I worked the couple got a one bedroom and we all had studios.

Is that common practice?

Really? I've been here almost 4 years and haven't noticed this.

OP just remember with a Hagwon you're gonna get about 10 days vacation.

There is a chain in Daegu called Moonkkang. They work 3:30-9:30 (not 100% but about 99%) and have a choice of more salary or more vacation.

I'm certified but my wife is not. We work for EPIK and it's not too bad.

Try to get 2,500,000 with your credentials. If nothing is good for you in Korea, you can get a job with a public school in Taiwan, pay is not quite as much though.

Plus it would be near-impossible to vacation together if both of you are at the same hogwon, even if it's a large one.

Damn. I never even thought of vacation. Thanks!

UPDATE: We did get an offer for a position in Seoul. 2:30 to 8:30, 2.3. Starts August 20th. However, the neighborhood doesn't seem all that happening.

Nos vemos...

Have had better than that salary wise and same hours wise in both Seoul and Busan and only have a BA and online tefl cert. I have over 7 years in-country experience though. But a teacher at my last hakwan was a newbie certified teacher and was on 2.6mil and we worked 2pm - 9pm.
