What does the alchohol in after shave actually do the pores anyway?

Just disinfects. Pores can neither open nor close.

I tried some of those Shark blades I ordered. Very nice. My initial impression is that they are sharper than the Derby, but as forgiving as the Dorco.

I also got some of the Derby shaving stick they sell. It's supposedly better than the Arko shaving stick, which is quite popular (You can see a stick of it in this video by the Gorrilaz http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yNeF30RverQ). That stuff lathers really really well, and the shave it very smooth. Yes, the perfume is quite strong, reminds me of a citrus laundry detergent, but after rinsing my skin smells like a fresh towel (who doesn't like that smell?).

I use Mitchell's Wool Fat most days, but I also have an old (tallow-first) English Fern, a couple D.R. Harris (including a nice shave stick for traveling), a Pre de Provence, and a Tabac. I have three safety razors: a Fat Boy, a 1955 Gillette Red Tip, and a Feather All Stainless. The Red Tip is my daily shave.

Nice. I like your selection.

I have a Gillette Fat Boy (1958) and a Gillette Slim (1965). When I want a really close shave, I use one of my Sheffield (mostly Wade and Butcher) and Solingen cutthroats (my favorite is my NOS Bonsa that I sniped on eBay for 26$!).

As for soaps, I most often use Proraso (great for the hot summers here). I also have the selection of Turkish cream and stick soaps (Arko and Derby (not fancy smelling, but great shave)) that I've previously mentioned. I'm currently waiting for a large quantity of Italian (Tcheon Fung Sing) and Dutch soaps (De Vergulde Hand).

I recently found in my closet a small quantity of long forgotten Burma Shave and Williams' Mug pucks. I don't think I've shaved more than half a dozen times with any of these two soaps (inferior glide, leave my face feeling dry, and the foam collapses quickly (just looking up from the sink or turning my head to the side is enough to dry it out)). I now use them to wash my hands.

Honestly, after I came here and saw what they have at Homeplus, E-Mart, FamilyMart, etc. I don't know why these recruiters tell you that this stuff isn't here. I can walk a couple blocks down to my HomePlus and buy some disposable razors and some deorderant if I wish. It's a bit more expensive, of course, but they have it.

Sure. You'd also be surprised what one can find on Naver Shopping armed with little more than a basic understanding of Korean.

In any case, I shave the way I do not because razors aren't available (Dorco's whole line of products are quite good). Wet shaving is simply much more relaxing and effective than shaving with one of those cartridge razors. It's also cheaper and environmentally friendlier.

Definitely. If I'm going to fast in the AM to shave- I'm going to fast in life!!

Unfortunately, I don't.

However, I've seen Valobra for sale here, 150g for about 20000 won, which is not much more than what it sells for in Europe (12 Euros). One is mentholated.

http://shopping.naver.com/search/all_search.nhn?query=valobra&cat_id=

But, at those price you might want to order some Proraso from here:

http://www.barbieredifigaro.nl

(Prices are lower when you login (discount coupons can be found online) and shipping is 15 Euros for an order of 2kg or less).

Or you could get some of this, which has received good reviews:

http://shop.bestshave.net/arko-ice-mint-shaving-cream-94-ml-tube-p-178.html

(Lower prices, good products, and shipping will be considerably less than at the previous one I listed).

Fellow shavers -

For the sticks and pucks that are listed on the various web sites I'm assuming you just lather them up with one of the bristle brushes?

I guess from the looks of these posts that there's no DE or traditional type shaving supplies available in SK? Too bad. Confused

Thanks again - strangely, one of the saner threads on Dave's.

I'm assuming you're responding ("correct") to my question about pucks and sticks being used with a brush?

Yes, soap is applied with a brush, although one can manage without if using a shaving cream (the stuff from a tube)...or an aerosol shaving cream (of course).

You can find all you need here in Korea if you know how and where to look. Use Google translate to search for items on Naver Shopping, for example.

Some items are actually very reasonably priced because they are either locally produced or the online shop is run by an importer (I used to buy excellent Russian aftershave cream for 2000-3000 won a tube, for example).

Here are a few search results...

Dorco ST-300 blades:

http://shopping.naver.com/search/all_search.nhn?query=dorco+st-300&iq=&cat_id=

Safety razors:

http://shopping.naver.com/search/all_search.nhn?query=%EC%96%91%EB%82%A0%EB%A9%B4%EB%8F%84%EA%B8%B0&iq=&cat_id=

Shaving brushes (not the best deals. I ordered mine from abroad):

http://shopping.naver.com/search/all_search.nhn?query=%EC%89%90%EC%9D%B4%EB%B9%99+%EB%B8%8C%EB%9F%AC%EC%89%AC&iq=&cat_id=

Shaving soap (and other stuff mixed in):

http://shopping.naver.com/search/all_search.nhn?query=%EC%89%90%EC%9D%B4%EB%B9%99+%EB%B9%84%EB%88%84&iq=&cat_id=

Don't forget to do a search for your favorite brands and check the other links I've already provided.
