Saw a very interesting report on CNN this morning about rising xenophobia in China after the recent assault by an English man on a Chinese girl...which was captured and diffused on the web.

See the video here....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j9ixjEWET8

Tried to find the report on the CNN website but couldnt. Only say the report on TV.

The thing that blows my mind is the number of British people posting that "THIS MAN ISN'T ENGLISH HE'S BROWN AND A MUSLIM !! Chinese should be mad with the Muslims not the BRITS !!" (Direct quote from video...)

I guess a British minority isn't truly British in their minds.

He is a northerner so in the spirit of the chinese netizen we could disown him based on his region background.

...Not if they don't define themselves as British and don't integrate.

Lets be fair, they've had generations and decades in which to become immersed in British life. They haven't- primarily because their religion does not permit them to. They haven't intermarried, they stay aloof from the culture, they support Pakistan at cricket.

Someone on another thread was talking about "Paki-bashing" happening in the UK. That is a very unfortunate. But its what happens when you not only don't integrate, but also are seen to justify terrorism.. and so on.

That's all well and good if you know a given person's background and that they themselves have failed to integrate. Do you know any such things about the man in question? I'm not even British and I've known a fair few British Muslims who drank and smoked with the rest of us, dated non-Muslim girls, etc. Can I judge all white Brits on the actions of skinheads?

1. If he holds a British passport he's British. Brits may not like that fact. They may not consider him a 'true' Brit. Doesn't matter. He's a Brit. Many Americans and Canadians in Korea who are ethnic minorities from that country (I've met or seen a fair number of black, Indian, asian, etc teachers from north America). Their Canadian or American or whatever.

2. Doesn't matter to the Chinese, as it is to some extent in Korea and other places. We all get lumped in together. Maybe a distinction for your race makes you slightly higher or lower in their view of you but we're all foreigners to the Chinese.

3. He deserved to be get his ass beat. The dumb f*** was stupid enough to assault a girl and if possible to be even more stupid than that, assault her on a public street. That action and stupidity deserves his ass beat. 3a. That said, I have a couple friends teaching in China and I'm told had been a Chinese guy doing the same thing there is a good chance no one would have done anything.

4. Using 'Xenophobia' in the title is inaccurate. What is xenophobic about stopping a sexual assault? With respect to my post in 3a.

-10 points to Slytherin regarding for that jibe as well. While I do agree that a lot of Pakistanis as well as others have not integrated into British society (same could be said for some in America), it has nothing to do with this video. Its a red herring. My guess is that the guy in the video is not even one of those types. Someone who retains their own culture, etc. isn't learning British english, getting a passport and teaching English in China presumably (assuming this is what this guy did). He's just a d*ck and unfortunately every race, creed and color has more than their share.

I'm not sure his ethnicity matters all that much... the fact that he's not a local, and that he tried to rape a local... that'll get 'cha a beat down in almost any part of the world.

Some pretty cheap shots at the end... I would have gathered they wake him up, stand him up... then put him back down again.

The reason i put xenophobia in the title was because it was used in the original CNN report (which i couldn't find or post on this thread). The video of the beating has caused a wave of xenophobia in China since it went on the web 2 weeks ago.

The timing seems too convenient (the Bo Xilai scandal and this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-18260506 )

And you're american.
... ie, you haven't lived in the north of England and probably don't have a clue what you're talking about when it comes to this issue.

Its more the fact that this type of event triggers the national memory of the Rape of Nanking... and other similar foreign humiliations of China.

Westerners try to integrate into korean society. Most people that have been here longer than eg 3 years are married to Koreans, learning the language, and e.g. support korea at sports events.
Pakistanis have been in the UK 50 years and still they deliberately keep themselves secluded. The fact that most of them openly approved of 9/11 didn't help either.

I didn't say "Paki bashing" was right. Its not, its apalling. But it is the logical result of muslim non-integration.

A fe w years back I encountered a group offing out of Chinese men beating the stuffing out of anther Chinese man. He had apparently raped a young woman and they were as my wife phrased it "repairing" him. So maybe race did not play into this at all.
