Couldn't Canadians just get an International Driving Permit? It costs 25$ and is valid for one year, renewable each time.

No. If you are resident long-term (as in here on anything other than a tourist visa), then you must have a Korean driver's license to legally operate a motor vehicle in Korea.

Interesting, thanks.

I had a K-drivers liscence when I lived in Korea but I assumed (wrongly) that canucks could just use the International Driving permit instead if they wished to.

Thanks for the heads up!

Easiest way for Canadians and Americans is to hit up the Embasy and then pop over to the Seoul Global Center not even a 5 min. walk away. There is a photo booth in Gwanghamun (?) station and the nice people at the Center can direct you to the Eye doctor, they even called ahead for me so everyone knew what was going on. Avoid the lunch hour and the whole process can take as little as an hour.

Here's their page on exchanging your licence

So the global center will do the licence exchange instead of going to one of the driving offices?
