Quote:
The military has decided to omit the word "minjok," which refers to the Korean race, from the oath of enlistment for officers and soldiers, and replace it with "the citizen." The measure reflects the growing number of foreigners who gain Korean citizenship and of children from mixed marriages entering military service.
...
Due to a persistently low birth rate, fewer young men are eligible for mandatory military service, while the number of multicultural families is increasing. According to the Ministry of Public Affairs and Security, there were 103,400 children (52,800 males) from multicultural families as of 2009. And among them, 6,431 were between the ages of 16 and 18.

In January, the military scrapped a rule excluding males of mixed-race families from mandatory military service. Around 350 men falling into that category underwent physical examination and around 100 of them are presently serving on active duty. And there are 140 career soldiers whose spouses come from abroad.

The structures of institutionalized racism are slowly being dismantled. The country is slowly opening up to a more enlightened era. Thats great.

The Korean mindset is taking too long to do the same however.

Eliminating the institutionalization of racism is the key element... I'm not surprised the Korean mindset isn't moving any faster though. Still, I wonder if the global economic crap-out will increase nationalism/racism around the world.

Define too long. The 13th Amendment was adopted in the US in 1865, but the first step towards integration, Brown v Board, wasn't ruled upon until 1954. That's 89 years between the end of slavery and the beginning of integration. 58 years later, there are still people in the US who discriminate against African Americans.

It's human nature to stay the course and to hold on to one's beliefs, moral or not. This is not some sort of flaw with the "Korean mindset", it's a flaw with humans in general.

Define too long.

When you have people who have been exposed to international media, lived abroad for years, dated or even married foreigners, studied abroad at universities..and so on.....who still harbor the same tired mindset..then hope begins to fade.

I would say that most Koreans don't fit these categories. And most Koreans that DO probably have a different mindset.

And anyway it's still a pretty closed society.
It was just a few years ago that a survey showed that 42% of Koreans had never spoken to a foreigner.

Gotta wait for the youngest generation, raised on MTV, to take over before any real change is noticeable. For some reasons why, see my post on "Communication differences" in this forum.

The Koreans barely survived an attempt of cultural genocide by the Japanese and the American media will finish them off.

The more English that Koreans use, the greater the torrent of Western media will drown out native Korean culture, for better or worse.

Extrapolate current cultural trends and birth rates two hundreds year in the future. Then, the Koreans no longer exist. They're a footnote in human history. Nothing else. Nothing more. A footnote.

oh please. Chinese are immigrating into Korea in huge numbers - if anything, Korean culture will continue to expand in Asia (from the influence upon the Chinese) and in the west, more Koreans speaking English and having families means sharing their culture with Westerners. "American" media is a mixture of cultures, btw.
