Probably outgrew that Grade 7 mentality a long time ago.
Seriously? Two grown men who are total strangers glaring at each other to see who blinks first? That's pretty childish and pathetic.
Ignore the xenophobic idiots.
There's a saying in English. "Never get into a mud-slinging match with a pig. You just get dirty and the pig enjoys it."
In this case pigs= the racist xenophobes of ANY country. |

No worries. The image of scary young ladies was pretty funny, though! |

You can't always ignore them UM. I mean how do you ignore upsetting comments? You don't. You have give it back.
Yes this might result in you walking around like a paranoid coiled spring but vigilance is the price of freedom I'm afraid. I don't know of any couple that sit back and allow tiny-minded simpletons to insult them. If they did...then they wouldn't still be together, obviously. |

This. well the first 2 lines anyway ..
Newbies in Korea - if girls here are looking at you.. or saying you are handsome - they are 99% of the time just curious of the non-Korean or being nice. They don't fancy you - sorry - you'll realise eventually.
Likewise if someone is 'staring' at you and your girlfriend and not giving you a big ol smile. It's probably because they are curious at the 'international' couple and Koreans aren't by-and-large famous for smiling at strangers in public. They don't all harbour racist grudges. - some do - but don't assume they all do cos you are simply inventing that in your head and it will make you act wierd. |

Get used to it bud. The stares are nothing to get your knickers in a twist about. Wave and smile. |

Vigilance? Sounds to me like you go out of your way to put yourself in situations where you'll come across the most unpleasant people South Korea has to offer.

Walk away.
How does escalating the situation help? Most sensible couples who are really in love can ignore an idiot. I'd say that someone who breaks up with you because someone mumbled something under his breath was just waiting for an excuse anyway. Most women I've dated would be mortified/horrified if I got into a shouting match with some jerk on the street.
In my view there are really only two situations (dealing with THIS particular issue) that warrant confrontation.
1) If the guy gets directly in your or her face/continues the harassment.
2) If the guy decides to get physical with either you or her.
Otherwise why give some ignorant jerk the pleasure of knowing he's ruined your day? Snubbing him cold sends the message that's he's not even worth that amount of time required to deal with him. |

Yes, I wholly agree. It's not that the guy is a xenophobe. The bigger problem is that he's a jerk...and what do jerks do? They push people's buttons. |

This is not paranoia nor is it a troll. Everytime I am in public chatting to a Korean woman, I get demonic stairs or intense gazes from Korean men. Korean women gaze at me when I am chatting to other women too.
At my school all the teen girls initially made flattering comments about my appearance. That has stopped now that I am part of the furniture.
The intense stairs by males is very frustrating, is any other expatriate male experiencing this? I am avoiding confrontation but it grates on my nerves. Infact, I was in Kangnam on the weekend and a complete stranger and his girlfriend too a photo of me where I was sitting. WTF? |
Could you at least spell STARES correctly before you make some inane comments on Korean people? I feel sorry for your students. |

Where I'm from there's something called a "sh*t eating grin"... It's a bemused smile that says "I know you hate what I'm doing, and I'm enjoying the fact that you hate it".
If the meaning reaches across the culture barrier, then maybe you'll give a racist a bad day. If not, then the smile at least shows that he's not going to ruin yours. |

Because they probably get off on the fact that no one--not even the mighty foreigner--stood up to him and it gives him a sense of power and a little bit adrenaline to do it again to the next couple. Plus you look like a pansy.
Put some fear into him and maybe he'll stop. |

I don't waste my time worrying about what jerks think. My self-esteem/ego is not validated by that. I really could care less if some idiot thinks I'm a "pansy". He'll have an extremely unpleasant surprise if he continues being abusive on that assumption.
Attempting to put some fear into him may have the exact opposite effect on him. Like I said it's not worth my time unless he gets physical/more verbally abusive.
Screaming "You see these rocks?" doesn't tend to be the best strategy... |

Yeah, he'll just support some politician that spews anti-immigrant rhetoric. Whereas if no one got all uppity he might go out the next day and meet a very nice foreigner and have a completely different view.
Can't live in the moment.
Great result. |
