|

After talking with the Korean Embassy about renewing my F-2 while I am here in the States I have discovered something new. Apparently the F-2 is being phased out and is to be replaced with an F-6. The new F-6 will require renewal every year for new marriages and every three years for marriages of several years or those with children. Also, apparently you will need FBI record checks to get the new visa, and proof of employment and this part I am not sure if it is an either or but they did mention that your Korean spouse needed at least 30,000 dollars. I hope that is an optional requirement. I mean, if my spouse has to have a job before I can come, that would mean she would have to go back to Korea, find work, and then I would apply (which apparently the embassy says no takes 6 months) and then I could meet my spouse. There was no mention if my in-laws could guarantee on behalf of my wife (that is what my parents did for my wife's US Visa) Does anyone know anything about this? What about people who have F-2s in Korea? or people married in Korea but not yet in possession of F-2s? |

All F-2-1 (spousal visa) are being transferred to the F-6. This has been happening for awhile now.
They're mostly identical with the F6 having a few additional rights, like if your spouse dies or disappears you don't have to leave the country.
Most people, new or old, kids or no kids are getting 2 years in country. It doesn't take 6 months in country. It takes average about a week, week and a half. The longest I heard someone waiting was 3-4 weeks. It might take 6 months if you're chinese.
The 30,000 just needs to be in her account for a day. Her folks, friends, etc can all just deposit a ton of cash in her account, she go to the bank and get "proof" of funds, and then at the end of the day she can transfer all the funds back out. They don't actually audit her account. |

I got my F6 visa about a month ago. The embassy told me about the $30,000 thing too but said that could use our housing deposit certificate instead as long as it equals $30,000 or more. So i took it to the embassy but they refused it (even though its worth $150,000) and said i need to show $10,000 dollars in a bank account for 3 consecutive months. In my experience, what they say on the phone and what they say when you go there are two different things. |

I think the visa's are more difficult to get out of country. When I got mine a few years ago here in Korea they just looked at our certificate, made a copy and asked my wife a few questions. No bank books needed and had my visa in two weeks. |

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that different embassies are handling it differently. |

So, could it be EITHER 10,000 for three months OR 30,000 for one day?
Also, could I use my in-laws bank book to show these things, or does it have to be one in my (or my fiance's) name?
Finally, is there a specific form you need to get at the bank? |

In my experience the embassy wanted to see $10,000 for 3 consecutive months. I guess its so that i couldnt just borrow the money for 1 day. It had to be in either mine or my wifes name. Finally, just a photocopy of the bank book was fine |

I applied for my f2-1 visa last year from Canada. Basically showed my canadian bank statement, passport, korean marriage certificate, my wife's info, application form and had to write a short paragraph explaining why I'm going to korea. 3 weeks later I had to pick up my passport with a 90 day f-2-1 visa and then apply for an extension when apply for the ARC card. They gave me 1 year on the F-2-1. ( typical for the first time)
This year when i went to renew ( in korea) back in march I just had to show my passport, arc card and fill out the application card and pay for some stamps. They didnt even change me to an F6 visa Status. I have the same Arc card except they wrote a new expiry date in the back. This time they gave me 2 years before I have to renew again ( 2014). They didnt even mention anything about the new F6. Sooo if they did change my status, It was done on their computer and they didnt tell me about it. as far as i know, I'm still on an F-2-1.
My guess is that you probably cannot "renew" a visa from the USA. You'll most likely have to apply from scratch again. IF you plan to come back to korea before it expires, just visit the immigration office and get the renewal there. they will give you 1-2 years extra and then you dont have to worry about it for a while |
