Hard to respect a profession (cops in the US) that turns down candidates for scoring too high on the initial aptitude test.

A lot of cities will be forced to declare bankruptcy to get out of their pension obligations, some of which are obscene.

$100,000 a year for a cop?

was just reading the comments under an article on yahoo business. topic of article not important. in comments one guy starts compaining about how as a retired california police oficer he's afraid to spend too much of his 9000$ a month retirement pension because rumors abound that when cali goes broke and austerity measures are forced on them his monthly pension may be reduced to 6500$ a month.

I'd have thought they deserved pretty hefty pensions as being cops in the US they probably get shot at on a regular basis, no?

Maybe so, but not that hefty. I have a difficult time believing the above quoted figure.

NYC Cops and Firemen Earning Ridiculous Pensions

The New York Times reports: In Yonkers, more than 100 retired police officers and firefighters are collecting pensions greater than their pay when they were working. One of the youngest, Hugo Tassone, retired at 44 with a base pay of about $74,000 a year. His pension is now $101,333 a year.

in other news...

nyc garbagemen cost taxpayers 144,000$ a year for salary, health and pension benefits...

Wow. I stand corrected. That's just embarrassing...

Whatever you can do to get paid, get paid.

I think the preachiness from some people here regarding government employees and their benefits is a bit hypocritical.

Of course you could give your cops crappy pay and low benefits and see what happens to law enforcement then.

Hypocritical? How so?
I don't begrudge cops a decent salary, but these pensions are way out of control. It will all come crashing down anyway because the system is unsustainable.
There is no money. How can you justify paying fireman 100k and up per year when they only work two days a week? And these d-bags have the gall to say things like " I deserve this high pay and if I didn't get such high pay I wouldn't do this job." Oh yeah you would because you have minimal education and its a two day a week job. So yes you would still do this job for 50k a year.

My ex-roomate was a firefighter. He usually worked three 24 hour shifts a week. IN the time I knew him he was shot at twice, electrocuted, slashed by debris twice, burned enough to necessitate sick leave 4 times (once by steam), suffered smoke inhalation, was involved in two car accidents that necessitated time off, and hurt his back carrying down a 400 lb. shut in from the a high-rise and had something like 6 other members of the department die. All on the job.

That and the average life expectancy of a big city firefighter post-retirement is something like 8 years, usually dropping dead of some sort of lung-related ailment.

Sounds to me that someone who puts up with that to save other people's lives and property deserves a nice pension.

Dude, don't judge until you stare at the burning building and your Section Chief is telling you to go in.

Same with a cop. What you don't realize is that if two thugs are shooting it out in an apartment building on the 8th floor, you can't just sit there in your car and wait until it stops. You have to run in there with your service revolver. You don't get to pick and choose what citizens to help.

I agree that reform is needed on government pensions. That's fine. But to have such a callous attitude to firefighters and police is just disrespectful. Are they all heroes and saints? No. But it's real easy to call the shots from afar. Having to walk in those shoes is a whole nother story.

Not to mention, if someone (private or public) ever decided that you were getting paid to much or that the pension that was promised you was too much and decided to take it away, I doubt you'd be all smiles about it and look to the greater good.

The city should meet its obligations, unless they go into bankruptcy.

To me the job is irrelevant. They made an agreement.

btw, i wonder when clear thinking americans will once again be allowed to say publicly that not ALL cops are heros?LOL just like people serving in the military are not ALL heros. this is brainwashing via fox news. cops and military personel are human beings, just like everybody else. some are heros, yes, but not because they wear a uniform, but rather because they risk their own lives for the benefit of others. many people in uniform are not heros, but scared, lazy, selfish incompetents, just like in any other profession. and yes, some people who wear the uniform are corrupt, sadistic, crooks who should probably be the ones BEING arrested, not doing the arresting.

You are probally now on the American watch list.

Somewhat, although I think the incentive for low-paid cops to be corrupt would be higher than low-paid teachers (although places like India are evidence I could be wrong about that).

On an unrelated note, what about retired military officers? Especially those who were desk jockies. My boss was in the Air Force for 20 years and now gets a pension plus his regular salary (which is over $100K). Not bad for a 40 year old.

I think it's kinda funny that a lot of Libertarian-leaning folk in this topic are complaining about the policies of state and local governments and using that as a reason not to pay US taxes. Federal pensions aren't that excessive (MPs and military firefighters don't get 100k/yr pensions, that's for sure. You'd have to be pretty high up in the brass or FBI/CIA to pull that pension), and I'm pretty sure no federal official makes $800,000 a year.
