I think this is a very noble cause. To anyone out there interested in doing this, I can tell you that I've taught North Korean defectors before and you won't regret doing it.

How did it go for you? Can you give more details?

I did not teach classes of only defectors. They were placed among other adult South Korean students in university classes. The North Korean students never identified themselves to their South Korean classmates as being from North Korea. The North Korean students did identify themselves to me. As a foreigner they will open up to you in ways they never would to a South Korean. Oddly enough they will trust you more and feel more comfortable with you because you are Canadian.

The North Koreans said that many South Koreans are suspicious of them and it's difficult to feel comfortable and make friends because of this. Koreans in general don't make friends easily anyway but it's doubly difficult for North Koreans.

They are especially eager students privately, but are very quiet among South Koreans in a regular class setting. That's why this type of program might be interesting because they are all from the same place, and there are no South Koreans in the room. I expect they will open up in that environment and it will be a great education for everyone, teacher too.

All I can say is that I really enjoyed teaching them.

Is there a website/page with more information? I probably can't make it for the dates stated in that article but I would like to know more information as well as if they will be continuing this program in the future.
I googled and checked international.gc.ca and didn't anything.

I'm sorry, I don't know anymore than you do. I wish I had heard of this sooner, because I would have applied. Unfortunately I've already made plans for the times they are holding these classes.

Welcome North Koreans to Canada!!

This isn't about getting used to living in South Korea as the article in the first post makes it out to be. There is a specific reason why they want Canadians to teach these North Koreans.

I am not saying it is bad, but why can't they be more open and honest about this?

I wouldn't mind teaching North Koreans as long as it isn't in North Korea.
