I am currently teaching a TOEFL speaking class. The students are at an intermediate level. I have been supplied with a book that is only examples (it seems to be more directed at advanced speakers). I've never taught TOEFL speaking before (only TOEFL writing at my last job). The intermediate level books I've looked at seem a bit easy for my students, and I'd like to really test them. How, if you teach TOEFL speaking classes, do you teach it? How do you teach using only examples? My students aren't anywhere near the level of being able to produce answers like the sample answers you get in books so what methods does everyone suggest for improving their responses? The students are usually able to pinpoint the main ideas, opinions and reasons in tasks 3 - 6, but really seem to struggle with properly fleshing out the details (they get the jist, but it's not, in my opinion, usually quite enough). Any ideas on how I can improve their details when giving a response?

Not sure if this is the place to ask or not, but what book are you using? If it is against the TOS to mention the book here, then send me a PM. I will be teaching a TOEFL level two in a few weeks and I have a book that seems to be appropriate for what you're looking for. It doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get and is available at most book stores. I can share information, but I haven't been here in a while and don't want to break any rules regarding TOS. Thanks

Try ordering a teaching manual from ETS. The school might pay for it. If they don't pay, it's a good investment.

I'm using Hooked on TOEFL Speaking. It really is a pretty dreadful textbook (well, not even a textbook), but I've had it dumped on me and have to make do with it.

Google [TOEFL torrents]

and find what you seek (books, audio, video, practice tests, etc).
