|
|
Since I've basically been computer illiterate since the rise of Windows, I have what's probably a stupid question. Is it possible to get my Windows Media Player 9 to play subtitle files for foreign movies? The file in question is an .srt. I tried clicking the "subtitles on" option, but it didn't work. I also went looking for a program that would read subtitles, but they just seemed to fill my system with spyware, and also didn't work.
If it's not possible to add subtitles to Windows Media, can anyone recommend a good free media player (I don't have any credit cards at the moment) that's not going to come loaded with spyware?
Thanks |

It is technically possible to do, but you have to find and download the separate file for subtitles (for each movie).
I managed to do it once a few years ago with some help. A Korean friend showed me that there were Korean subtitle files to be found without too much difficulty for download and use with English movies, but I could find no such English subtitle files for Korean/foreign language movies.
I think that unless the subtitles are actually on the screen (i.e. embedded in the video), or unless the various Media/DIVx/XviD have come up with a better way to do subtitles I don't think you're going to have much luck if the subtitles aren't already there. |

Should have clarified. I have the subtitle file. I'm just too stupid to be able to get it to play. |

Place the subtitle file and the movie file in the same directory. Make the filename the exact same for both, except for the extension. Then try playing the movie. |

There are filters that are required for subtitles to play.
Google for "subtitle filters" and you should have some results. Vobsub is the most popular usually.

That's the way to do it.
[movietitle].avi
[movietitle].srt
I use Mplayer and it works great. |

What if there is no ".avi" after the movie title? Can I add it? |

Yup, foreign movies from suprnova. Not the Korean ones, though, because I have a dvd player and can rent those.
Thanks to everyone who helped. I'll try vobsub. I was using KoalaPlayer, and it worked to play the movie and subtitles, but, besides being a lousy playback program, it also took over my entire media system and set itself as the default player for everything, and refused to let me uninstall. |

What extension does it have? There should be something, unless you've got your system set up to hide extensions. |
