This thread is epically hilarious! LOL at the fact that someone actually requested hard data on why Koreans choose one hobby over another, in a reflective thread about why skateboarding isn't very popular. He wants hard data! Let me put on my glasses and get out my notepad and my poster board showing pictures of 10 different hobbies, and then I'll go survey 100 random Korea male adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 (really, they should be considered adolescents until they move out of their parents house, but for the sake of my research, I'll limit it to 18 ).

Me: Excuse me, dude, man, brother, can you explain why you don't engage in skateboarding as a hobby choice?

Subject1: Skate-what? Skate-where? Leave me alone, I'm late for my 8pm math hagwon class.

Me: Excuse me, young man; might you provide me with a solid reason why you chose a flaming pink bicycle with lime green wheels as your primary mode of transportation as opposed to a skateboard, dude?

Subject2: Skate-what? Skate-where? Why should I do that when no one else is doing it? This flaming pink bicycle with lime green wheels is a real man's piece of machinery, chicks love it, plus all of my friends also have flaming pink fixed gear bikes with neon colored wheels.

Me: Excuse me, my man, come over here for a moment. Would you care to illustrate why you have taken up the black man's official hobby (BMOH) of basketball while completely neglecting the white man's official hobby (WMOH) of skateboarding? What gives, (dude)?

Subject3: Huh? Black what? White what? I've never even seen a shop selling skateboards, so why would I think about buying one? I like basketball because it's fun. Basketball isn't just for black people, you moron!

Me: Excuse me kind sir, might you have a moment? Please explain to me why you are not currently outside enjoying the sun and the clean Seoul air on this beautiful day?

Subject4: Huh? Do you know the PC game called the star-crapped-uh?

I suppose that someone who joined this board in 2003 probably would be asking for data about something completely subjective and abstract such as why one youth (who lives in a culture heavily impregnated with the group/herd mentality), given the choice of a few readily available hobbies versus other hobbies that are not marketed, promoted, nor readily available, would choose to engage in a readily available mainstream hobby versus one that is not.

Korea also lacks the necessary "grunge" scene to match.

God aweful sidewalks are another factor....sorta like how korea doesn't have much of a surf scene(everyone tells me the waves suck or the army secured the good beaches nearby).

Korea has mountains so snowboarding is popular.

So your strategy when arguing is when you are unable to answer a point to just ignore it?

I'll be sure to keep that in mind.

Whatever floats your boat.

If there was a point worth responding to, I'd have done so. You came on here offering nothing, unable to refute anything, but demanding hard 'proof' of others, on an informal opinion topic. Complete nonsense.

Obviously nobody is going to take you seriously or take the bait. That's the point YOU missed. And the fact that you're still at it speaks volumes.

Except I don't have to refute anything. It is the person making the claims that has to prove them. That is how it has always been. And so far no proof has been offered. Which means you and they have nothing. Thanks for coming out... now we're done.

Oh and keep on working on the quote function...you should get the hang of it one of these days.

Oops, had a setting clicked on by accident on the quote function, didn't notice, so thanks for that.

That was your best contribution to this thread by far. Smile

As for the other part, you've got to be trolling now. Nobody cares if you refute anything or not. Trust me on that. "Now we're done" you say? If you'll notice, we didn't even start and nobody else seriously responded to your nonsense either. That should tell you plenty. Good luck searching for your 'proof'. Laughing

have you seen the state of the footpaths here? really not good for street.
wouldn't dare skate the road here with the crazy taxi and bus drivers.

Korea doesn't have the attitude for skating.
skating is a culture, the scene needs certain things to breathe.
Korean's lack that attitude.

surfing, skating, bmx, motorcross, X-sports, etc etc

they are more about the Math Olympiad.

now some Korean Americans back home are badass, but that's because we already had a scene for them to come into so it was available for them to gain attitude and street cred to become skaters.
Korea is all about the hiking, cycling, and inline skaking dressed to the nines in those dorky outfits. LOL

there is an active Snowboarding scene here though, I will give them that.

Actually I saw a regular street board and a longboard at the punk show in hongdae park last night..

In short, it must exist but its very very fringe...

It was grrrrrreat... even the chicks were slamdancing... you cant do that whit at 930 club in dc anymore n most of the us in my experience....

Hard data? Burden of proof...?
w o w . . .
I think the stats would place your superioty complex as desperatly needing to get laid... or something....

Hilarious though. So thanks for the laughs!

On a thread about skateboarding... again I say: wow..

Hehe ...

"Why isn't skateboarding popular in Korea?"

If skateboarding had more screaming, it would be popular in Korea.

I know it's just me (well, maybe not ONLY just me ), but the better question might be "Why is skateboarding popular anywhere"?

It's pretty amazing to watch, but my second thought is always "I wonder how many times that person has had multiple fractures in each limb and what a really good faceplant on concrete feels like"?

I managed to learn to ride a bicycle with only the minimal amount of physical trauma. And once you have mastered skateboarding it is probably a fun auxiallary means of locomotion. At least until that next awesome faceplant.
