Yes, there is a sizable part of the expat community with MA's who get on their pedestals and proclaim that hagwon teachers are good for nothing but "ddong chims." Sad that they are fooled by Korea's apparent obsession with such qualifications. Pro tip; go to the UK and see how much extra weight an MA gets you there. Only those professionally qualified can claim any type of superiority here.

I have a university degree (Politics & Asian Studies), a diploma and a certificate but have been unemployed off and on over the last 20 years. My sons and my son in law all have basic high school education, work as truck drivers and earn much more than I have ever earned. What's more they have never been unemployed.

So why did I spend all those years at university ? Originally I thought I would be more employable, would earn more money and consequently could give my family a better lifestyle. But I also enjoyed the challenge of obtaining a higher education and of proving that I was not as dense as I (and other people) thought.

Was it worth all the effort ? Yes, but I wish I had studied Information Technology. Computer programmers are much more in demand and earn higher salaries.

A university degree doesn't mean dick anymore. I've known plenty of people that have MA's working in less than desirable jobs. Hell, things suck back home...that is the reason why I'm in Korea. I almost went to truck driving school because they make pretty good money. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have gone to University. It hasn't paid off. Unless you consider crappy jobs as the payoff. A University education is vastly overrated and keeps being drilled as the theshold of success so that the Universities make money. They don't care about giving you the degree...only that they get their fat tuition. Degrees don't mean as much as they did 20 or 30 years ago.

To the OP:

Was it really such hard work to get your degree in the first place? All that drinking and partying...Sure you know what 'hard work' means? Laughing

Yo, like another poster said get another job if your unsatisfied, I used to make 50,000 a year doing a job I hated. The opportunites are out there in whatever endeavor you want man, Im just making a pit stop here myself, refueling then back to the big leagues again.
