Thanks!!!

That other website has a thread on this. One poster claimes that the minimum GPA is 2.5 (http://waygook.org/index.php?topic=29382.0).

GEPIK does not have a minimum. EPIK has one starting this fall semester

Out of interest, what do they do for countries that don't use GPAs? I'm from Australia and I'd never heard of them until I came to Korea and got to know a lot of Americans.

Plus how do they reject someone for getting lower grades in a much tougher academic program? How do they know which universities are better than others? The high school graduates who work at the education office are going to do this? It sounds like just another excuse to reject applicants.

Uh, oh. Someone's asking logical questions about Korean policies. Razz How do they reject you for getting lower grades in tougher programs? That easy. They reject you for getting lower grades in tougher programs. They look at the number, and if it's lower than the minimum, they reject you. Pretty simple. Smile

This was already discussed last fall when SMOE started this policy.

The minimum was/is 2.5, my GPA was less than that (2.34 I think during my degree), and I've been working for SMOE for almost 3 years. They never even questioned me on it. I did however take an additional 2 years of open studies after that (I didn't feel like joining the real world and staying in school full time maintained my interest free status on my loans) and I had something like a 3.13 average for those courses, so maybe they just looked at that...

Can't remember my own GPA. Haven't looked at it in years. Average marks I guess. Some good, some bad. What if you already have experience working for EPIK and have good references? Wonder if they'd still reject you? Guess you'd have to apply directly to a POE through a recruiter maybe?

I knew someone that just lied about their GPA, and it wasn't a problem. I thought SMOE was a 3.0 minimum, but I could easily be wrong about that.

Yes. But it probably depends on whether you're applying from within Korea or from overseas. If you're already here, you may be grandfathered in. From overseas, you're submitting your transcripts with your application.

Naw, I think you were right. Pretty sure it is 3.0. I've taught several years (two in Korea) and have a TEFL but wasn't considered. Of course, the other thing to consider is a recruiter screening your application (or maybe they don't open the transcript?...if you're applying from overseas...). I was upfront about my GPA because I didn't believe they wouldn't waive that arbitrary standard. Oh, well.
