1) Korea is at 19.89 liters per person.

2) The US is at 14.43 liters per person.

3) Canada is at 12.59 liters per person.

That's based on data collected between 2003-2005...a particular three year period.
It's not a comprehensive overall picture. Honestly now, you think that three years can tell the story? Particuarly since it's based on (your words) "outdated statistics"?

The answer is clear: Both Koreans and the NET crowd are soaked in booze.

Who isn't? The 3D workers. Cheers to them for not passing out on park benches or drunkenly approaching people just because they are foreign or frolicking around, treating another country like a playground and locals like objects for their amusement.

Something tells me that from the eyes of a Pakistani Muslim, Koreans and NETs are pretty much the same and carrying on in the same ridiculous fashion.

if those who partied on the beach were migrant workers or exchange students no one would make such a big issue. the problem was that they were teachers (foreign or not) teaching children of the local people. i really don't know who to blame - those stupid immature teachers or those who hired those teachers.

All this hubbub over something some dude wrote on his blog about he heard happened. For all we know, it was made up by the Korean locals who saw a bunch of foreigners and automatically assumed something bad was going on. Usually when something like this happens, the Korean press are all over it.

Not to mention some of things mentioned (garbage everywhere, public drinking, and being noisy) are things Koreans do all the time. Vandalism is a bit more serious though. But still, they're all things I see on a regular basis here, with the exception of nudity. Then again, this is a country where little kids go to public baths with tons of random nude adults.

I suggest you read your report that you linked to again. The information it contains has data from 2001-2005. The report that I linked has data from 2003-2004. A lot of your data is more outdated then mine, yet you accuse ME of defending outdated statistics...?

As for agreeing with the statistics no...I'm just looking at the problems with the methodology and data collection of your report. Basically most projections there are an estimate.
Now there's nothing wrong with estimations if that's all we have to go on. But that is not the case here. We have verifiable RECORDED statistics to go by...that being the case I'd rather go with that then estimations.

Anyway this whole debate started because you claimed that binge drinking is a bigger problem here then in the West. As of yet no stats have been provided that back up this particular assertation...at least for Korea. From page 16 of your report (Heavy Episode Drinking). There is no information available for Korea while North America is in the third highest category.

[/i]

You're being totally ridiculous. They explain the methodology behind unrecorded alcohol in the report, and it's sound: in a country where making your own alcohol is very common, recorded alcohol use doesn't tell the whole story. And sorry, argue with the methodology all you want, but again, the WHO is the most reliable source you're going to find on the subject. Finally, perhaps we lack specific data on heavy episodic drinking, but please, put two and two together: Korean drinking, typically, is heavy episodic drinking. It's not a couple beers at dinner, it's getting absolutely smashed on soju. The statistics show that Korea drinks a hell of a lot more than the States or Canada, the anecdotal evidence agrees. Are you just being contrarian at this point? How about you offer your thoughts on the matter rather than nitpicking the most reliable report we could possibly get.

Zero evidence of this.

Forcing open the lock on a portaloo is hardly a major crime. Its the sort of thing a Korean would do every day.

There is a tendency in this country to lock away, fence off, or otherwise bar the use of anything that people might need or enjoy. A sort of spoilsport mentality going on.

I've never encountered anywhere as many open and safe and clean public restrooms as I have in SK. 24/7 to boot.

All I see is that this guy Chris (who wrote the article) read the email sent to him by his EPIK coordinator and became enraged. He had spent so much time and effort changing the Korean perception of NET's by not drinking, not womanizing, not being obese, trying to learn about Korean culture...only to have it all taken away in a day by a bunch of teachers getting trashed on a beach. Now he isn't welcome on this beach in spite of his sincere effort to understand and be accepted by Korea. Neither are any of you posters on here claiming to be "one of the good ones" - you aren't welcome either. None of you are. Everybody on Wando hates you. It's possible they hated you before the party even happened. The EPIK coordinator hates you too, and he hates Chris. Keep in mind, his blog stated that the island of Wando is considering banning foreigners from it's businesses or just being openly hostile to them. That means NO FOREIGNERS - Pakistani, Iranian, Chinese, Russian, Spanish -NO FOREIGNERS - because one time....there was this beach party.

Chris, welcome to Korea.

This is going a bit far, even for you. Since you're not responding to any of the posters calling you out in this thread, one can only assume that you're trolling. I don't believe that even you can genuinely have such a sense of shrill victim-hood.

I couldn't find anything on that on Korean language sites so I don't how true it is. If it is true, I don't know why Chris would be mad at other foreigners rather than at Wando for their ridiculous reaction. If a bunch of Korean guys cause trouble, are they going to ban all Korean men? It makes no logical sense.

So, the author of the article actually doesn't know what happened during that party? That just about shreds his credibility.

Obviously those pictures were staged, as we've already established here that Koreans do not drink, and even if they were to they would never embarrass themselves in public, unlike all the foreigners you see passed out on the streets here at night (because it is only a Westerner thing). Just like spitting, pushing and littering. If you say it enough times on the internet it becomes true!
