I asked my employer for proof that he has paid my taxes. He said that he has to file by May 30, and then it takes a month, and then I will get me tax proof - conveniently a day or two AFTER my contract expires. Is this true? If I leave the country without proof of paying taxes when I turn in my alien card, can I be fined at immmigration if I don't have proof that I paid them? If so, what is the fine? What if he hasn't been paying them, which I suspect may be the case, what happens? Would I get doubly f-ed?How does it work?

The school is responsible, nor you. It's the school's proverbial ass that will be on the line.
Now, if you really need to know just call, or visit the tax office.

Mishlert is correct, the payment of taxes id the schools responsibility. When you leave, immigration will not even check to see if you have paid tax or not. Don't worry about it. Smile

I wanted to look into my taxes so that I can rest assured that the Korean government has a record that I paid them.

Why?

Because I don't want to pay Canadian tax. If the Canadian government is ever curious they are going to contact the Korean tax office, and they won't particularly care about my opinion if the taxes haven't been paid.

The Korean office, if they can't track down my former hagwon, may request that I pay again if indeed the taxes have not been paid.

I phoned the Korean tax office to see, and they said they can't tell me if I paid my taxes because that is my hagwons private information. I don't understand.

As Mishlert stated...go to the tax office and get the information yourself. You have access to your information. Don't ask them if the hagwon has paid but ask for a certificate of your taxes paid.

Personal income taxes have to be filed by May 30. That's what I understand but the hagwon has to have settled up in January or February. That is they should have forwarded the withholding taxes from your pay to the tax office by that time.

If I'm wrong then someone please tell me because I'm about to get my taxes done for the last three years. I too want the proof that I've paid in Korea so the Canadian government won't harass me too much when I do go back.

Cheers
