With only have 5 weeks left in Seoul, I lost my ARC Card.

My immediate thought was to get a replacement, but now that I think about it, do I really need to...

I don't use my ARC card for anything nowadays...When first arriving in Korea, it was necessary for opening bank acct and getting a cell phone, etc but now I feel like I could live my last month here and not miss it

My worry is, will I need it at the airport for my flight home? I have my passport of course, and I hope thats enough. But I think I remember one time at customs an employee asking to see my ARC card for whatever reason.

Other info: I'm on an F-4 Visa, not E-2 if that makes a difference.

Get a new one or be ready to pay a 100,000 won fine when you leave.

Interesting read ghostrider. I read the article and thats definitely my concern.

However, I have come and gone from Korea 2-3 times after completing my contract. And, I have never been asked to give back my Arc card. Its because my visa is not E-2...The F-4 arc card even looks different from the E-2 one..

So far, the consensus is 1-1 as to whether or not I need to bother getting a new one. More replies please if you have experience on the matter!

Even though they may not ask for it, you should definitely have something that explains why you overstayed, what they expect, would be a tourist visa.

Here's a simple solution. Drop by any Jumin centre and ask for a "Certificate of Alien Registration". It's $1, takes 2 minutes, now you have proof of your status and peace of mind.

They have always asked to see my ARC every time I leave the country. And then they ask if I'm coming back. If I say yes, they'll give it back to me. If I say no, I presume they'll take it. I also know people who got it taken away from them when they actually intended to come back, but they were flying out shortly before the expiry date. This was before I switched to F4, but I cannot imagine it would be different with F4 (in fact, it may be more stringent as the fines seems to be higher, one million won, if u don't return it when leaving the country permanently).

http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/index.html -> Overseas Koreans -> Purpose / procedure of residence statement : second last section (ARC for F4 is called Domestic Residence Report Card).

Absolutely! I have a valid visa til 2013, just not the physical arc card.

Im sorry but i sort of doubt the fee is a million won for not having an arc card..Even if it were, I'm at the airport leaving the country, not at the mokdong immigration office. There's something wrong with someone if they try to charge me a fee as im boarding a plane and possible make someone miss their flight.

As always, the law itself and enforcing the law is not the same thing. Smile
I agree that you may not need it, I also know people who left the country (temporarily) while having forgotten ARC at home. But you can read the rules yourself; it may not affect you this time, but may affect you if you are to enter Korea at any time in future and try to sort out your status then. Or it may not, it is again an enforcement issue. But since you asked, I assume you wanted to know the rules. There you go, directly from the government pages. Smile

Edit: There is also an another aspect of this. I assume you don't know where your ARC is. That means there is a small chance that somebody is doing something with your ID card right now, and you have not report it lost...
