We kept a record of all of our hospital costs from conception to birth, if anyone is interested in knowing what it costs to have a baby in Korea.

Expensive vaccinations lay ahead.

Holy crap that's cheap! Are you sure you're not missing some zeroes? Wink

I think our monthly health care insurance is almost double that amount and we've always been healthy.

that is cheap! My wife is getting a c-section so I think it'll be a lot more expensive overall than yours.

Even a c-section (assuming you have insurance and don't need the neonatal ICU) only runs about 1 million plus prenatal costs.

We paid out about 1 million in total (prenatal, birth and post natal care (private room, western menu, etc.)) and another 300k in total for all immunizations from birth to 6 years.

The journey begins. I heard one statistic that the total cost of raising a kid is a quarter of a mil. US; prior to college.

Be careful with the vaccines.

Can I ask you guys a questions about the shots for the baby? Did you allow them to give your baby that shot where it leaves about 8-10 holes in a rectangular pattern in their arm that you see on all the Korean kids nowadays? Does it even go away? I don't want my baby branded like that.

This is the new style (expensive.. 70,000won) BCG vaccination.

In the UK, at least when I was a young whippersnapper, they do a test at about the age of 12 years old to see whether you need a TB innoculation or not. I didn't need one because I was already immune to TB. In Korea it seems to be an innoculation given to you whether you need it or not at a very young age.

On the positive side, they didn't try to mutilate my son's johnson yet!

There are some very good arguments that, actually yes it is...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/the-lay-scientist/2011/dec/06/1

"Men should have the right to choose circumcision, not have the choice forced upon them. Infant circumcision without consent or immediate medical justification is an unjustified violation of basic human rights, that shares more in common with ancient coming-of-age rituals than responsible medical practice"

I'm wary that this is common practise in Korea and am fully expecting a showdown if/when doctors or relatives try to foist this on my son..

I'd sure love to see you try to argue that it's a necessary procedure.

Yes, and it pretty much disappears by about the age of 6-8 with most kids.

Wouldn't you think there would be a better way to give shots than what they are doing now? Leaving 10 dents in your child's arm for 7 years is ridiculous, not to mention it looks a bit unsightly, too.
