Good on you, OP, for dropping the weight when you did. Not to steal anyone's thunder, but please keep in mind that this loss was accomplished at a young age. As you get older, your metabolism slows and odds are you won't see such dizzying results in such a short period of time.

Good, though, that this stresses the basics: eat less crap and move more and you'll lose weight. And some are still remarkably unknowing when it comes to soda..just how much pure sugar you're consuming with no health benefit whatsoever.

I can personally attest to the metabolism slow down.

And experts claim soda is one of, if not the, leading causes for the increase in obesity in the last 40 years.

If one was to do nothing else but quit drinking those carbonated, caffeinated, caramelized, sugar water drinks, he or she would go a long way in losing weight.

205 ain't that bad depending on how tall you are. I think if you're around 5'10 - 6 ft, 205 is a good weight assuming it's mostly muscle.

5'11 and it was all in my butt n gut. Razz

Gaining muscle weight isn't as easy as I'd hoped for!

I was tired of being overweight (lazyness) I live in Itaewon & just started walking everyday from my apartment in Itaewon 1 dong, thru Itaewon 2 dong past the Hyatt, then to the entrance of Namsan park, up the mountain then thru the park and down across the bridge by the Hyatt and home. Took about an hour and a half and about 5 miles. You cant help but to lose weight.
It builds your legs up and you tend to meet some interesting Koreans along the way. I once helped someone after they slipped on an icy path and he turned out to be one of Park Chung Hee's ministers. We ended up getting drunk in some area that I don't know (Chongyang-ni?) . Good for the legs, not for the liver.

Simply put: eat less & better and move more.

This is not about being skinny, it is about being healthy.

I run regularly, hike and am otherwise active on a daily basis. Food-wise, just eat better and manage your portions! It is not that hard and it sure does not mean you cannot have some cheesecake sometimes. This is all about proportions, portions and frequency!

That Big Mac Set you had yesterday is no big deal if it is occassional (say once a month or twice a month), it becomes a problem if it is regular (once a week or more). Same with meat in general: manage your plate portions where meat does not occupy the lions share of the plate. A good plate should see meat occypy 1/3 and veggies the remaining 2/3 or so. Basic rule: more veggies than meat.

Also eat more earlier in the day and less as the day progresses as your body will need less. Avoid having heavy late meals or eating just before bed time!

Snacking is fine but again in proportions that are not gargantuan! Instead of bringing the HOLE BAG of chips with you on the couch to watch a movie or a game, bring a smaller bowl.

Drink lots of water as it helps your body.

Most of all BE ACTIVE this is not about crossfit mad training! It can be as easy as walking everyday.

Huffing and puffing up a few flights of stairs has nothing to do with being fat. There are plenty of skinny people in the world that wouldn't be able to climb stairs without losing their breath. I am considered overweight but I walk the 4 flights of stairs to my job everyday, while everyone else hits the elevator.

NYCgal did not say fat, she said unhealthy....

I will second what she said: a person who walks up a flight of stairs and ends up out of breath is out of shape and likely unhealthy.

Being overweight is unhealthy as well as it puts pressure on your body (heart and other important organs as well as muscles, bones and joints).

I didn't say fat. I know plenty of unfit thin people. Being fat does tend to make it more difficult, but sure, there are overweight people who have a lot of muscle under the excess fat who could probably out-stair-climb me.

I still have that same 4 or 5 lb to lose, but that's only because I just visited home and ate a LOT of pizza and bagels for a few weeks. I walked around the city a lot, though, so at least didn't gain anything. I regret nothing!

She most certainty did say fat- it is there in black and white.

She did not say, " if you are so unhealthy blah blah blah", she said "if you are so fat blah blah blah"

She may have meant to say unhealthy, but she did not.

Either way you put it, if you can barely walk up a flight stairs, you're unhealthy.

You're right. I did. My bad. I wrote that a while ago and didn't reread. Still, if you're SO FAT (which is what I said) that you can't walk up a flight of stairs, you're unhealthy. Also, if you can't walk up a flight of stairs and are thin, unless you've got arthritis or recently had surgery, you're also unhealthy.

Agreed!

Not only that, but taking the stairs is a good start in getting back into shape.

A long time ago, my wife told me a story about some ancient king who wanted his scholars to write a book on healthy living. After some time, they came back with a 10,000 page book. The king looked at the massive tome and said, "It's too long--nobody will read it". The scholars went back and whittled it down to 1,000 pages; the king said the same thing. Again and again they came back--100 pages, 10 pages, and even one page--with the same response. Finally, a scholar handed the king a piece of paper with one phrase on it: 소식(小食) 다동(多動)--"Eat less, move more".

If you live near Namsan in Seoul, just go every morning before work - walk to the top then down. Thousands of locals do the same.Your metabolisim revs up significantly (best is at least a 1 hour walk-more the better) Yes 75% to 80% of our problem is what we eat, but walking up Namsan is an easy goal. You'll start to notice fat burn in 2-3 weeks. You will be ravenously hungry after your walks but just eat eggs or egg whites (morning) or steamed chicken breasts w/broccoli (evening).
