I'm curious what percentage of Dave's posters are supporting Korea at the olympics, and how many want Korea to trip up. Given the number of folks on here who've been mistreated in Korea, and a certain uneasiness with Korean ethnic nationalism, I'm sure there's some diverse opinions out there.
So where do you stand? Cheering for Korea, and happy to see them do well?

Lol, trying to start a flame war are we? I'll get the ball rolling.
I usually don't care but I usually root for the UK if at all just because its the host country. And I always find myself rooting against North Korea against anybody. |

I root for Korea, unless they're competing against a US squad.
The only US team I root AGAINST is the men's basketball team.
I'd like to see the Korean soccer team do well against Japan. There's a lot on the line. Dunno how true it is, but supposedly they get military exemption if they win a medal ?? - talk about pressure! |

I cheer for America generally, unless I'm familiar with one of the athletes. Say, Surya Bonaly or Happy Harada or Usain Bolt or Andy Murray. In the case of soccer, I cheer for whatever team my fantasy football players are on to lose so they don't get injured or face rotation.
I don't see a problem with cheering for your home country when you're in Korea. It's what you should do.
But cheering against Korea is just as much mindless ethnic nationalism that people are upset about.
Some ajosshis are rude and nationalistic, so I'm going to cheer against their team and country while I live here. I don't know any of the athletes personally, but they deserve to lose because of the way some of the people in this country behave.
Tell me that that isn't blind ethno-nationalism in a different form right there.
"I'm against blind ethno-nationalism. I'm cheering against Korea." Does that statement make any logical sense whatsoever? |

If my wife (Korean) is not with me, I root for Korea. If she IS with me, I root against. I like pissing her off. |

I'm sure my response wont surprise the bitter expat contingent either.
I'm pulling for my "home" team because it just seems natural to feel some affinity with the hopes & pride of my neighbors, students, & colleagues.
Korea has done admirably in mastering some niche sports & they're not that shabby at a few mainstream ones too. Impressive haul of medals for a small country, which becomes an Olympic host itself in just 6 years.
Why on earth shouldnt they try to excel & feel good about it when they do? |

For~!
I felt bad for Korea last night in women's volleyball... Destinee Hooker plays in the Korean League but, of course, was on the American team... and whooped them T.T |

Usually Canada, Korea, and the US... but really, I "cheer" (not so much) for any athlete that looks interesting.
I love the athleticism of the games. Not so big on the nationalism. If they were to simply run on their own merits (as opposed to representing a country), I'd be equally as interested. |

Is that her real name?
In answer to the question. It's pretty hard to feel anything more than neutral when other nationalities are celebrating their country's sporting triumphs. If you live in said country there's a good chance these triumphs will be mentally stored away by the natives to emerge later for taunting/boasting purposes. Bearing that in mind I find it very difficult to drum up much enthusiasm for Korean victories. Although, for my wife's sake I genuinely try. |

Destinee Hooker is her real name. That's the best olympics name since American swimmer Misty Hymen a few olympics ago. In this Olympics there was a Canadian female swimmer named Victoria Poon. |
