Apparantly the Korean footballers will get out of military service if they win tonight so check out their expressions of joy/devastation after the final whistle. Imagine the pressure on a guy who misses a vital penalty |

That's pathetic and completely unfair to everyone else who has to do their term of service. I now have a new reason to root for the Japanese underdogs. |

Anybody who medals gets out of military service and is paid a pension every month for the rest of their lives.
The argument is that by medaling, athletes have served their country more than they would in the military. I can see the argument and a few medalists aren't going to do the country any better by being a glorified janitor for a couple of years. But it's still unfair and one can argue that most people would probably serve their country better by getting job during that time and paying taxes. Then again, well-connected rich kids also get out or get an easier time so why not athletes who worked their asses off? |

I think the UK is the only country in the world where the athletes just get a medal and nothing else. Still, it hasn't seemed to have put them off. |

I think their agents are shrewder than that. Most of them will probably be able to financially milk their success in the form of sponsorship, advertising and TV appearances etc. People like Daley Thompson are still doing the after-dinner circuit lol.. |

I'll still be going for Korea, but I agree with you. I don't think it is fair to others. |

That's not entirely true. All GB gold medalists get their picture on a stamp and a post box in their hometown painted gold ... now if that's not incentive, I don't know what is! |

President Lee visited Dokdo before the match. Japanese weren't too pleased. ...putting the future relationship under serious question mark... That was before the match. Now they sound like sore losers with capital S. |

Presumably they would have been justified if Japan had won? What a ludicrous comment. |

Any male Korean gets released from the mandatory military service if they:
- receive any medal in the Olympics
- receive either gold or silver in the Asian Games
- receive either gold or silver in the World Baseball Classic (might be just gold)
- make the finals in the World Cup (the Korea/Japan World Cup was a special occasion as it was the first time for Korea to reach the quarters)
There might be more but those are the main ways. Korea just made a rule that the players actually have to play in a game to receive the release from military service. Hence, the one Korean player being brought in with 3 minutes left of the bronze medal game. |

Don't exactly know what you mean by 'make the finals in the world cup.' You mean just get there, as that should be fairly routine for South Korea to achieve with the easiest regional group stages? Maybe you mean get into the knockout stages? By the way, South Korea reached the semis in 2002. Yes I know it's difficult to believe. |

Might be just gold for the Asian games. I heard silver too though.
Yeah, they reached the semis. My mistake. By finals, I meant the final game for the World Cup tournament. I'm basing this off of public pressure if they do actually ever reach the finals. I don't think it is an actual exemption rule. However, I am sure they will receive the exemption from the conscription if they reached the finals. The public will be demanding it and it will allow a politician to look good. You never know though. |

That was gloating. I can say what ever I want, after the result. Have not learnt to taunt your rival? It's fair game to kick 'em when they are down. |

In which case, President Lee looks so ridiculous after the women's volleyball! Korea looks pathetic on the international stage now. Takeshima is Japan's!
