Is there oil or other resources there? If not then why is it important? |

It's actually comical how easy it is to prove that SK has no case whatsoever. Just go look up "Jukdo" on wikipedia, and then every time a Korean tries to point show some ancient map proving Korean ownership, just explain to them that that is in fact Jukdo (a totally different island, with the same Chinese characters as the Japanese word "takeshima").
Even a 5-year old could figure it out, so there's no question in my mind as to how completely disingeneous SK's politicians are on this matter. |

Umm... wouldn't it mean the opposite? That is, Takeshima means bamboo island, which implies that Takeshima actually refers to Jukdo. That would mean that Japan should actually be contending the ownership of Jukdo and not Dokdo. |

No, because Jukdo is right next Ulleung-do, which has been inhabited as long as anyone can remember. Obviously then, Jukdo (or 'bamboo island', as written in Chinese) would have been documented long ago (and it was).
"Dokdo", by contrast, has no old records. The first record is when Japan claimed it under "terra nullius" in 1905, which was even before Korea was annexed by Japan (in fact the two events had nothing to do with each other). Fact: there isn't a single map or any records from prior to Japan's claim on the islets that has the words "Dokdo" written on it (nor any old maps that even has the two islets drawn on). Each time it is only the single island right beside Ulleuengdo: "Jukdo".
Korean "experts", however, would have us believe there are ancient maps showing Dokdo (written as "bamboo island", a totally different name) while at the same time omitting the larger, more significant island of Jukdo (Jukdo and Dokdo never appear simultaneously on any of the those maps they trot out). Completely disingenuous to say the least. |

That's right, history didn't start until 1905.

The fact that SK is in possession of the islands right now seems to me to be a pretty strong case. |
Who owned a scrap of land at some point in the distant past is pretty much a red herring. Borders change. That's the reality. Who currently owns it is what matters. Right now, Alsace-Lorraine belongs to France. It was not always so. Maybe someday it will change again.
Right now, South Korea has real issues with China that matter. It is irresponsible to be stirring up anti-Japanese fervor at this time. |

Out of curiosity, where would you sit on the Falkland Islands? |

What an asinine comment. How about you quit being a smart ass and actually post something with substance? A map or a document perhaps? Do you have anything whatsoever? I'm waiting... |

Captain Corea probably supports Chinese occupation of Tibet, and would support the Soviet Union being an entity. At least that's what his "logic" dictates. |

Should most of Arizona and half of New Mexico belong to the Navaho? |

Don't ask me for all the details, but yeah, I think there is.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Friday paid a landmark visit to the lonely East Sea islets known as Dokdo here and Takeshima in Japan. The unprecedented trip, which made Lee the first South Korean president to set foot on the islets coveted for rich mineral resources in its surrounding waters, raised Tokyo's ire.

Does this matter?
From my conversations with students, I would say it does not matter to them. It is a matter of national honor.
It is the same thing as the name of the East Sea. It doesn't matter that everyone else calls it the Sea of Japan. It is an 'insult' to Korea that it is called that.
When something gets ginned up to a matter of national honor, logic, rationality, common sense does not matter. |

Depends on what the people living there want. |

from the site ---
"The major reason why Japan has recklessly claimed that Dokdo is their territory because of the East Sea abundant maritime resources."
Although there is an enormous amount of Gas Hydrate undiscovered, only Russia is developing it for commercial purposes because Korea does not have advanced technologies yet. Japan has accumulated much information on Hydrate and began exploring the Nankai Trough in November 1999. |
