Watch "King Corn" which is easily downloadable. Like someone stated before
it's not one thing but a combination of things to a greater or lesser extent. The problem I had here in ROK was eating rice (Oh yeah the beer consumption) Just try giving it up for 1 month and you will see the difference. Rice plus beer means you're going to be a fat slob.

Carbohydrates. As simple as that. Eat less carbs, don't get fat.

What food makes you fat? The kind you eat too much of without exercising sufficiently to burn off the excess calories.

The people who say that you can eat pure lard or that you can eat whatever you want as long as you burn the calories are wrong and any nutritionist would tell you that.

Yes in theory it is possible to not get "fat" this way by burning the calories you consume, but if you want to remain HEALTHY you need to have a balance of all the food groups ( fats, protein, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables & grains ) to maintain good metabolism and to ensure your organs function correctly.

For me it also gave me cavities. I have had 3 or 4 of them in my entire life, two of which I got while living in Korea. I blame all the white rice. Very Happy

People who spout the "burn more than you take in" mantra are missing the point. Obviously if you expend more energy than you take in you will lose weight, nobody is arguing otherwise.

No, the point is this. The human body has something called an appetite. If you simply deprive yourself of calories, your appetite will compensate and make you eat more, thus you're relying on willpower to lose weight. Either you have iron self-control and will lose weight, or you're normal and you won't.

Now, some smart people have posited that it's not the amount of calories, but the type of calories that you eat. Why? Well, certain calories have an effect on *satiety* meaning that they essentially make you less hungry even when you are expending more calories than you are consuming. It's an unpopular theory even though it's backed by *gasp* facts. And what is this mystery magical diet? High in *healthy* fat, regular amounts of protein, low-carb. And yes, it works. A high-fat, low-carb, regular amount of protein diet curbs your appetite and allows you to lose weight extremely easily because, and sit down for this, you don't feel hungry.

Let's review. You bolded "It's an unpopular theory" and "low-carb" as if there weren't any other, you know, words and phrases a person with low-to-moderate reading ability would know can change and modify the ideas being communicated.

To reiterate: I never said low-carb diets were unpopular, which apparently, you in your rush to be snide, weren't able to decode.

No, the dumbed down version of what I said was the idea that different types of calories have a different effect on satiety, which is an unpopular theory. Because, the popular theory is essentially "a calorie is a calorie."

But have fun being ignorant ,sarcastic, and snide, I hear that's a real winning combination.

IMHO, MeMyselfI had a lot of good things to say.

Not all calories are the same. You eat some foods and they give you energy all day and others leave you feeling hungry.

Everyone has different body types and health issues, so no one diet is the same for everyone but in my personal experience, which you can take for whatever it is worth, the key is nutrition. When I eat a balanced diet, high in nutrition (including vitamins, minerals and protein), I almost never over-eat. I assume it is because my body gets what it needs, so it does not induce me to eat more.

It is when you eat junk food, which while it may momentarily satisfy you, actually it isn't, it probably leaves you feeling a little sick or a little sluggish, because it is not giving your body the nutrients it needs.

Also, if you plan on certain physical activities, you can choose the right foods for the activities. You may want to eat more carbs or protein depending on the type of physical activitiy you plan - or less carbs and proteins depending on how sedentary you plan to be.

Anyway, not all calories are the same. And, just reducing calories can hamper one's health so becareful. And, not all exercise is good for you. Much depends on what you want the exercise to do for your body and what kind of shape you are in.

And, lastly, I would not avoid fats. You need some fats every day and if you don't consume them, your body may start producing it.

The key is balnce and knowing your body well (as MeMyselfI says). The better you know your body, the better your chance of staying healthy and fit.

Nonsense. People lack discipline. Eat more fish and chicken breasts. Eat less fatty foods. If you want a snack have a banana not a candy bar. Exercise 3 times a week.
It's not rocket science. Why are Americans always looking for excuses?

Actually, it is beyond rocket science.
The variables involved in maintaining good health are staggering.

That being said...as you say...people do lack discipline...especially when it comes to oral fixations...stuffing the mouth with just about anything that will fit inside it.

Not disagreeing with your basic premise...people need to be held responsible for their own personal health...though some do seem to have more challenges than others.

Those of us with seemingly gifted genetics tend not to respect that others may have a more difficult time with biological warfare which requires eternal vigilance in order to maintain even the slightest advantage in overall health.

The enemy is within...and some have more enemies than others.

Just saying.

I agree with Kepler, Adam Carolla and drydel.I would add that much of the issue is about insuline and avoiding starch and sugars. The best info can be found from Gary Taubbs, the Weston A Price Foundation an Sean Croxton at Underground Wellness.

absolutely, 100%, this. stop making excuses people and eat healthy if you want to lose weight. many simpletons out there have no self control but they have no one else to blame but themselves.

its hard to pinpoint one thing for general weight problem but low carb diets are great for losing weight and the reason low carb diets are working well is its helps u cut out sugar which is basically a man-made substance our bodies can not deal with, essentially sugar is a very slow acting poison (google it if u dont beleive me). its linked to over 100 health problems including fatty liver and diabetes. after i cut sugar from my diet (cereal, soda, bread, yoghurt, ice cream, cakes, biscuits...anything like that) i lost 8kg. i also started to exercise too which helped but i think 80% is diet 20% is exercise. look how koreans are getting fat these days coz they adopted western diets like hamburgers and pizzas and cereal. for example special k is marketed as a health cereal is loaded with 20% sugar!. u need to eat natural producce not anything made in a laboratory like high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated fats, nitrates whch ihave been proven disatsers for human health. white rice isnt bad otherwise why were asians so thin when thats pretty much all they ate!! as long as it not dyed of course which some is these days. stay away from macdonalds/coca cola/pepsi products. since i stopped sugar my eczema cleared. my sinuses got way better and energy and sleep improved. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM great lecture about sugar. imo food companies are second only to oil companies for award for scumbags who dont value humans except in dollor terms.

In a low-carb diet you'll drop your water weight within a week. But if you go back and binge on carbs for even two or three consecutive meals, that water weight will come right on back.

There's nothing wrong with low-carb diets, its a legitimate approach. But there's some hype surrounding it, as well.
