I work at a Hagwon, yesterday my co-manager said to me that the school would not be open, because of the Typhoon, and that I am to come in on Saturday as a 'make up day'. Essentially all the classes i was due to teach, today, would now come in on Saturday and I have no choice but to work it - as do the other teachers. However, rather than doing my usual 1:30pm-9:30pm shift, I will be doing 9:00am-4:00pm. Although if some of the students don't turn up then we may get to finish early.
Initially I was pretty annoyed by how the decision was made - being told to work it rather than being asked if I can. However, I've found out from my public school friends that they've been given the day off as one of their 'holiday days', again with no choice
What are you thoughts on this? Given the choice which one would you rather deal with? Have you had anything similar happen to you because of this Typhoon? |

My school's in the same boat. If classes had been cancelled today we would have to work Saturday. Thankfully, it looks like classes are going ahead. |

"I'm sorry, but I have TESOL/Korean/CELTA/Insert-Name-Here class on Saturday."
I'd likely go in, though, because my boss is pretty great. As for public school teachers: no way. If that had happened when I was at public school, I'd have said "Nah. I'll come in. As you know, family is very important to Americans, and my plan for vacation is to visit my family, and it is impossible to change my plan or my grandfather would be angry," then called out sick the next day. |

It seems another storm is due to hit Thursday, coming right through Incheon and Seoul. I'm wondering if my school will be closed tomorrow too. |

All the teachers at our (public) school came to work, hung out, and ate Chinese food. The weather really wasn't even that bad up here in the mountains, the kids probably should have come to class. |

The school didn't cause the typhoon, and they are taking precautionary measures. I don't see the big deal here. I would try to avoid using up one of my holiday vacation days and go in on one of the two days I normally had off.
By taking Friday off you have Mon-Thu, Saturday, then Monday to Friday. Previous schools I worked at scheduled it differently. Instead putting the make up day between your 2 days off, they would simply make a 6 day work week the following week. This would give you Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off (3 day weekend), and then you just get ready for 1 day off the following weekend. I prefer this over the on and off premise you posted. |
