I've seen them doing the tape thing in Hong Kong at banks and malls. Not sure if it was actually recommended by the authorities though. |

Typhoon severity rankings are mostly based on wind speed but at the low end of the scale tropical storms can still cause tremendous rain damage. I've seen it & its not pretty.
Heres hoping Tembin skips through quickly. |

| Whatever happens, this thread is sure to produce more hot air than any typhoon can manage. |

true there have been some barely tropical storms (winds like 40-45 mph) that have some tremendous damage in terms of flooding and tornadoes.
heck Issac is barely a cat 1 hurricane and because its barely moving and they are expecting far more rain in NOLA than Katrina produced that is whats worrying people there now. think i saw a prediction for SE La of over 20" of rain
lets hope this one moves as fast as Bolaven |

| You guys should hit google. These are superstitions or what have you from places much farther flung than Korea. Many people in the US also believe this, if they didn't US papers wouldn't routinely write about it. |

So let's get to the real point...will I be getting the day off work tomorrow or not?
Are they getting as worried about this one in the Korean press. |

Actually this one could end up being worse in some ways- mudslides, sinkholes, and flooding and all having one right after the other. The ground is already saturated as it is.
The good thing is that it looks like it is moving rather rapidly so it wont linger and dump rain.
For those of us who live next to mountains or have to drive to work and risk seeing our cars flooded, this ain't a laughing matter.
Those that treat these things as laughing matters are basically people who don't own any property worth worrying about (house, car) that they can have such a blaze attitude. If they had the financial wherewithal to afford such things, they might not be so carefree. |

| Panicked public |
Today in Emart was chaos. People banging shopping carts into one another, eating all the free food samples like no tomorrow, shouting from one end of the supermarket to the other. Cars cutting each other off in desperation to get into the car park faster than each other. Horns. Crashing. Farting. Old people pushing, shoving and cursing to get to that 10 won off discounted dried seaweed - reeking of alcohol (presumably to calm nerves) and then promptly vomiting it up outside. Neglecting to flush the recently deposited poo in the public toilets (desperation to get back to the storm shelter ASAP?). Kids fighting. Lots of people yelling "Hurry! Hurry!" at the cashiers. I had to retire to the deodorant section just to get some peace and quiet.
Surely it has to be Super Typhoon Tembin induced panic buying.....?
Right?
??

up to date tracking model has is veering sharply and to hit central S. Korea. missing Incheon and grazing Seoul. The rain bands, I'm sure, will extend over both cities though. |
Those lines are projected center with 70% certainty.
the center could end up over seoul or it could go south more towards Daegu.
I don't know how wide this particular typhoon is, but Bolaven extended out a couple hundred kilometers. The whole country will likely end up feeling this one. |

Steel makes a very good point here. When you own an apt, car or other valuable property or have kids, these storms are no joke. A flooded house or parking garage or car is no joke. |

| Guys, the tape isn't to prevent breaking, it's to prevent the shards from going everywhere if the glass breaks. I highly doubt anybody thinks tape can prevent it a window from breaking. |

No, he makes a stupid point. I own both and I still make jokes about this storm. You think running around like chicken little yelling 'the sky is falling' is gonna change anything? Piss, moan and complain about it...yea, typhoons hate that. Usually they'll go the other way. |

Actually I was making a wry statement on people lacking the means to own such things due to possibly poor financial management, laughing at those who do have such means being concerned over their livelihoods and property.
Those that laugh at such things (people worried about their crops) wouldn't appreciate it if someone were to look at their bank book and start laughing.
Now that doesn't mean you can't crack some wise about hurricanes and whatnot. Nothing like some "Hurricane Neddy" Simpsons hurricane humor, but at the same time one shouldn't encourage recklessness or fail to show compassion and understanding to someone whose house is flooded and their crops destroyed by dismissing things as "nothing". |
