You are an adult, you are doing something perfectly legal. Why the paranoia? I'm not making fun of you but if you are this troubled by something so insignificant then possibly you do need some professional help. Read your own post again when you feel rested.

I wouldn't assume that being seen smoking is a non issue for women here. I have seen this double standard in action. Friend of mine lives two stops away from her hagwon but was seen smoking (in her free time) and it was duly noted.

I think it is more the smell that is an issue. If you smell of smoke, or worse alcohol, then you will lose points. If you go out with the hagwon teachers you are expected to drink right? And I have always seen at least one Korean take out a cigarette before the night is over. It's the day after that you need to come to work with a clean look.

So, if you are crossing the street coming to school with a cigarette in your hand, that's not going to win you points.

Hey OP. Your boss won't fire you for smoking. They will fire you for offering your students cigarettes, but only if they're under 14.

On a more serious note, the horror stories you've heard about Korea being super old-fashioned about shit like that are only half-true. Conservatives will give you the stank-eye, and men might be hesitant to give you a light. Otherwise, you're clear. Your boss just spent a ton of money to get you hear, and they're not going to fire you without having a damn good reason (mind you, their good reason might not match your idea of what a good reason is).

Cigarettes aren't a deal-breaker. But you might want to quit smoking, you know, for health reasons.
