Agreed.

The trainer at the gym I go to has a giant tattoo running from his shoulder to his elbow. No one bats an eye.

Can't help thinking there's a bit more to this story than we've heard.

I agree with this.

Though, I often wonder how/when this policy is enforced. I've been to a few saunas in Korea that have this public ordinance posted in both English and Korean. I don't think it's' a rule, I'm pretty sure it's a law. Yet, I've seen a number of Koreans in a number of different saunas with large tattoos and nothing seemed to happen. My white friend also has a few and nothings happened to him in the years he has been in Korea.

I can't speak about gyms because I'm a runner with arms like a 6 year old girl.

That's no different from Mafia movies we grew up watching, but really, how many Koreans really look up to and admire gangsters? Want to be gangsters? Would be proud of their sons and daughters became gangsters? I'd bet not many.

Eh, I would say it is more glorified in the United States, but the film industry here has a real soft spot for the emotionally scarred gangster.

I've had a lot of students that look up to and admire gangsters. I don't think there parents would be happy about it. It does carry a stigma in Koran society, but then there is a romantic version of the lifestyle that a lot of people seem to believe to (in the west and east).

Feel free to disagree with me on this, it's just the impression I've had since I've been here based on my personal experience. I was happy to read the owner of the gym isn't up for it.

I'd say it's about the same as the US. There's a certain admiration for gangsters and in my opinion, in some ways they are more glorified in Korean movies. Most politicians in this country are thugs anyway.

I actually see more tattoos in the upscale gyms than I do in the smaller neighborhood ones. A lot of that is probably on the younger generation that has lived/travelled overseas.
