I noticed an increase in tats, I assumed they weren't real though. |

Agreed.
The trainer at the gym I go to has a giant tattoo running from his shoulder to his elbow. No one bats an eye.
Can't help thinking there's a bit more to this story than we've heard. |

However, I could well imagine that a more upmarket gym here, like the kind someone like him would go to, might conceivably have a rule that tattoos should not be visible. Would that be a silly rule? Yes, maybe so. But it would not be a completely out of leftfield rule, particularly for this part of the world, and they're entirely at liberty to make whatever rules they see fit for people using their facilities. Just like Mr Maroon 5 is entirely at liberty to take his custom elsewhere if he doesn't want to cover up his tattoos. |
I agree with this.
Though, I often wonder how/when this policy is enforced. I've been to a few saunas in Korea that have this public ordinance posted in both English and Korean. I don't think it's' a rule, I'm pretty sure it's a law. Yet, I've seen a number of Koreans in a number of different saunas with large tattoos and nothing seemed to happen. My white friend also has a few and nothings happened to him in the years he has been in Korea.
I can't speak about gyms because I'm a runner with arms like a 6 year old girl. |

Oh dear, women having control over what they want to do with their own bodies. Whatever next? How dreadful.
I mean, women do exist only to satisfy your gaze, right?

The owner is a hero for not submitting to the ridiculous celebrity worship that goes on. I'm glad he applied to rule equally to everybody especially levine, who for some reason thought he could come here and mock the owner of a business while enjoying it's services. The sad thing is the owner and witnesses probably thought he was an ESL or military guy.
I wouldn't be surprised if he set the no tattoo policy after having a few shady customers come in affiliated with gangs, and if that is the case then even more power to him for not submitting to the glorified gang culture that goes on here as well. |
Korea has a glorified gang culture? How exactly? |

That's no different from Mafia movies we grew up watching, but really, how many Koreans really look up to and admire gangsters? Want to be gangsters? Would be proud of their sons and daughters became gangsters? I'd bet not many. |

Personally, I like to think he got kicked out because he is in that shit band Maroon 5. That's reason enough. |
Yeah, must be hard being a multi-millionaire stud. What a loser. I mean, he doesn't even have teaching credentials!!
 |
Did you get him to sign your panties while he was here?
Keep enjoying all the crappy music you want, I'm hardly going to suddenly fall in love with your "stud" (!) and his shitty, shitty, shitty band because you release the power of the dreaded roll-eye emoticon. |

Eh, I would say it is more glorified in the United States, but the film industry here has a real soft spot for the emotionally scarred gangster.
I've had a lot of students that look up to and admire gangsters. I don't think there parents would be happy about it. It does carry a stigma in Koran society, but then there is a romantic version of the lifestyle that a lot of people seem to believe to (in the west and east).
Feel free to disagree with me on this, it's just the impression I've had since I've been here based on my personal experience. I was happy to read the owner of the gym isn't up for it. |

Ever heard of 김두한?
I'd say it's about the same as the US. There's a certain admiration for gangsters and in my opinion, in some ways they are more glorified in Korean movies. Most politicians in this country are thugs anyway. |

I actually see more tattoos in the upscale gyms than I do in the smaller neighborhood ones.
A lot of that is probably on the younger generation that has lived/travelled overseas. |
