I told my girlfriend that I thought Psy would be a one hit wonder in the US and she seemed pretty upset.
Don't know about you guys though but I'd love to be a one hit wonder in the US. Take the money and run, that's what my dad always said. If Psy has any sense he'll do the same. |

It'll be like that 'Cottoneye Joe' thing a few years ago. He'll have one follow up single which will sound very similar and not do half as well and that'll be it. |

I don't buy that there is a ' subversive' content of gangnam style...
every Korean - who speaks the language- and knows the subtleties of it - has said its not a critique like foreigners like to think it is ... It's more like laughing at Korean 'chavs' who think they are living the lifestyle of the gangnam elite but are ... Fakes?.. Not real rich people....
Is that a message i want to cheer?....
Seen psy in an commercials lately?... Still think he's an 'alternative' Anti establishment type?... |

In Korea, and probably most of Asia, celebrities do commercials to make money. Most bands/singers etc aren't making huge amounts of money. A record that sells 100K copies is considered good. Which would be a flop in the US. I know the Japanese still buy records though.
Busker Busker has done commercials, but I would still consider them an "indie band." |

Exactly. Diminishing success which will eventually die out. I'm trying to think of other examples.

#3 on the Canadian charts this week, #11 in the US, #4 in New Zealand...
One of our friends whose originally from Seoul but now lives in Canada is starting to think it's getting a little bit weird, like when she's doing her shopping and she sees teenagers breaking out into the horse dance when the song plays in the store. |

| I'm in the States right now, living in a Korean community and working for a Korean company, and I can say I've heard about this song a whole lot more from Americans than I have from Koreans. It's everywhere. |

Psy's career may or may not be able to sustain itself abroad.
Regardless, there's bound to be a series of these 'hits' from K-pop artists from here on out.
What differentiates this phenomenom from Cottoneye Joe or Right Said Fred is that this a full-on (K) government-coordinated project with heavy corporate backing.
Psy can be spun as 'subversive' just as Lee Myung-bak was cast as the people's hero five years ago.
So get used to it folks, this is just the beginning. |

Wait, so Psy, the guy who has been oft-banned, had his music video pushed on the American public by some Korean government coordinated project? This whole youtube phenomenon and stuff like the Today Show was all because of the Korean government?
I wish the whole thing would go away too, if I hear the song one more time, well I'll sit there and take it, but in my dreams I'd smash the speaker/TV. But I don't see any Korean government conspiracy here man. |

you don't seem to know what you're talking about. the gov is not involved in kpop industry. it's 100% private. do you believe that the k gov is involved in success of psy's gangnam style? no. in fact gangnam district of seoul is using the song to promote the area. the gov is not promoting kpop but sometimes using it to promote events like yeosu expo and psy did have a concert at yeosu expo. the gov also uses sport stars like yuna kim to promote tourism or some events. big k companies pay kpop/sport stars to advertise their products. and do you believe the gov manipulates the entertain agencies such as sm and yg with their regulatory authority and the tax money? of course not. you better go to church this sunday and pray hard for you wish "Psy can be spun as 'subversive' just as Lee Myung-bak was cast as the people's hero five years ago." |

Ah, it's a conspiracy. I'm surprised it's taken so long for that suggestion to be thrown out there. Perhaps you can explain then, why the government and corporations decided to give PSY their heavy backing rather than somebody like 2NE1, or any other K singer(s)? |
