hmmm if somebody was unable or felt threatened to leave wouldn't that be the basis for a kidnapping charge??

if so maybe somebody should let the police know

I would imagine that it was more like the Simpsons episode with the Movementarians: "Are you leaving? Is there any special reason to do that? You're free to leave, but we'd like to know why."

I know a couple of people who went, but they haven't said anything about it, except for one Korean girl who posted a picture of it on facebook and said that it was magical and she'd never forget it. Not sure what to make of that exactly...

Mannam have gotten a lot of bad press recently, maybe unfairly. But it's a fact that Shincheonji are using Mannam events to publicise their own movement, which implies there's quite a bit more than a casual relationship between the volunteer organisation and the cult. However unwitting or well-meaning the people volunteering are, they should be aware of the connection between the two. As far as I'm concerned, if they continue to defend Mannam despite all the evidence to the contrary, they're either lying about what they know or are being wilfully blind.

Korean society basically provides perfect conditions for cult formation.

I've always been amazed at the unquestioning innocence of these people.
Easily led astray by advertising, news reports or government propoganda.

I saved a few foreignes from this cult in Myeongdong on Saturday. They were at exit 6, the busy one, trying to recruit volunteers for Mannam and passing out those flyers they always have. When they asked me I just chuckled and went "Shinchonjiiiiiii!". The Koreans looked like I had just taken a dump in their soup. The foreigners didn't know what it was and were adamant it was just a volunteer organization. I let them know what Shinchonji was and how they were connected, and then the foreigners were like, "wait, really?" and left. The Koreans told me to leave.

There has been a really blatant smear campaign against Mannam lately. I am reluctant to believe most stories about them and think it is unfair to compare them to Hitler Youth. Whoever started this campaign against Mannam probably has ulterior motives and knew all of you would be happy to jump on the bandwagon. I think it is great that a church can set up a volunteer organization and have it be about helping people and not just religion.

I don't think there's been a 'smear campaign' against Mannam at all, people are just curious to know what the real deal with this group is. I'm also curious to know how exactly they are 'helping people'. It seems like Mannam uses voluntary programs simply to recruit foreigners. Their world peace rally thing seemed weird too. I get they want world peace, who doesn't, but what are they doing to achieve this? Are they actively doing anything to help disadvantaged people?

I think if Mannam were honest and open about who they were and their intentions, then we wouldn't need to be discussing them on here.

great article about somebody being duped here about the "festival"

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/South-Korea/Daegu/blog-744397.html

been a ton of other blog posts about being duped

whats amazing is there are still many, many foreigners who went and still don't see the connection and still defend them.

As PT Barnum said "there is a sucker born every minute"

There's also a great write up explaining one person's feelings and the results of being deeply involved with the local Mannam group:

Those are some good links, thanks. There's a good point in that girl's blog about how Mannam are using foreigners to legitimise their group without actually making them members of the cult, and I think that's why a lot of people don't see anything wrong with Mannam (well, that and the fact that there are lots of attractive young Korean women involved as well), i.e. because they're not actually trying to convert them, just use their image in promotional material.

She also raises another interesting point, which is about how much the Korean people involved in Mannam actually know about the conncection with Shincheonji, bearing in mind that quite a lot of Korean people knew about the connection long before Mannam started trying to recruit foreigners. I've talked to some Korean people who are involved in Mannam, and they've argued that it was because of jealousy from other churches that this was being done. When I pointed out that this doesn't make any sense (Mannam isn't a religious organisation and therefore shouldn't care about what people say about Shincheonji), I got something about how Mannam was originally founded by the Catholic Church (which I could find no record of), and that that "Pastor" Lee was simply providing money out of the goodness of his own heart. Do the people in Mannam genuinely believe this is the case? Are they that dim?

Had a couple of friends who played soccer at the festival. They said it was amazing. I asked about the connection to Shinchonji but they said they never heard or saw any religion like activity.. I know another guy who volunteered for them before and he also enjoyed the experience..

I have no idea if they're connected or not, but was wondering if anyone could fill me in on Shinchonji. What do they stand for? And do they have beliefs which are doing more harm than the other religions on our planet are, or are they the same? Did a google search and couldn't find anything they've done that's been terrible, just looks like another religion to me.. I could very easily be missing something though..

Their beliefs are probably only equally as harmful as other religions' beliefs are.
