I recently made a film that I'd like you to see.

It's called the View from Here. And I'll be releasing it free online late Oct/early Nov. I'll be sending links to everyone who likes it on facebook.

You can watch the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/50876750

If you like it please consider liking the facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/itsallmudoutthere

Thanks.

This trailer was weak...Had no idea what the movie was going to be about besides a guy that would rather jerk to por.n and be stranded on an island with anyone but his ugly wife (which I can say I don't blame him). Not that interesting. I hate trailers that give you the whole stinking movie in 3 minutes, but you got to lead in a bit further than that what you showed. I just looked at the trailer and didn't read anything about it underneath, but I can't tell if it's drama, suspense, it could even be a horror flick for all I know. Not much was gained by the trailer.

I like the backgrounding of the wife (?) character during the noraebang scene, some nice blocking.

Not sure the timbre of the voice works well for the voice-over though, seems a little wan and I found that I stopped listening to him about halfway through, as no key words popped out - it was a featureless mumble, not something to grab the attention.

I actually think the trailer would have been better without the voice over all together, and without that horrible video effect right at the start, which almost made me turn it off. A quickly cut sketch of the central relationship is enough, capped by the wife dancing alone in a crowded room and the husband (?) walking alone in a wide expanse of nothing.

wow. knew I'd get a critique but man, some people lack social skills. I'm actually taking the criticism to heart... trailers are a tough thing to make... figuring out how to tell a much longer story in 60 seconds is hard enough, but it's also a bit of personal taste.

@dodge7:
Code:
Had no idea what the movie was going to be about besides a guy that would rather jerk to por.n

Actually, that's exactly what the movie is about.

Code:
but you got to lead in a bit further than that what you showed.

This is useful critique. Noted.

@transmogrifer: thanks for the input... not much I can do with the trailer as the release of the short closes in... but certainly something to think about going forward -- the short is prep for shooting the feature.
I'm going to get some more feedback about the opening logo... but I'm of the opinion you might be right. I may consider yanking it altogether.

@J Rock: No I don't actually.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the opinions and the feedback!

No worries; I tried to be constructive rather than negative. Though I can't emphasize enough how cheap and tacky that video effect is at the start - it's not a great way to begin a trailer, as it gives a terrible first impression.

This isn't meant to be snarky, but you could use a spell check and grammar check on the summary under the video window.

Reminds me of the scene in the Office (UK) when Tim asks Gareth who he'd like to be stranded on a desert island with and he says Daley Thompson.

+ the acting and filming looked pretty professional.
- The bit at the end where the narrator starts talking about 'the lover is someone who etc......' It sounded like gogbbledegook and put me off a bit.

I was pretty perplexed and confused by the whole thing. It wouldn't really appeal to me personally.

But kudos for getting up of your ass and making a movie, it's more than most people are doing here.

Points taken... grammar checked, I wrote that late and haven't gotten back to it.
It's not a film for everyone... never intended it to be. Perhaps a bit too rough around the edges for many.
Regardless, great feedback. Thanks.

I liked the trailer.

It looked quite professional.

It looked like it's trying to be some kind of meditative/intellectual movie... but given that I doubt it has a $200,000,000 budget, I'm not really expecting Avatar.

Thanks. We're on a small budget but we've been working on it for quite a while. Over a year of rehearsals. And we're going to shoot it again as a feature to hammer out the kinks.

This is a mistake. A trailer (or preview for old-school folks) is not about telling the story in 60 seconds or however long the trailer may be. It's about getting an audience interested in the story to the point where they will willingly watch the full movie. If you tell the entire story in 60 seconds, then the audience is finished...and so is the movie.

Question:

Who are the main characters?

Are they ESL teachers or something else?

Does Korea figure prominently in the movie? Or is it just kinda like wall paper?

The trailer seems redundant of so many other scenes w/expats that I've witnessed in Korea over the past 16 17 years- especially the part where you film her flashing her tounge out and almost licking people with it, waving her arms all over the place as if she were in worship of...something.

I feel the same as Beckett in this regard. I wouldn't waste my time watching the movie unless there was something substantial in terms of a message.
