On Saturday I got fod poisoning after eating a couple of chicken sticks in Itaewon. This is now the sixth time I've gotten food poisoning in Korea. I know hygeine standards in Korea (even among restaurant staff) leave a great deal to be admired, but six times. The first time was in a school cafeteria, another was drinking a coffee from a vending machine, another was from eating a deli sandwich...so it's not just a street food thing.

I never had food poisoning until I came to Korea. This country really needs to up its game hygeine-wise.

'pion style, sorry to hear that your anti-bodies are helpless against the itty-bitty local germs.

I've never had food poisoning here...therefore the opposite of what you think must be true!

China maybe but Korea?

I only got sick once and it was from a Western style pub in Gangnam (Big Rock)...sour nasty fish. Stick to Korean food.

I had it last year after eating some chicken (cool pop) they call it. I was at a hagwon at the time and went in to teach class. Almost threw up in class before I ran to the bathroom. The only sick day I was able to take at that place lol.

LOL?

No, you're right. Korean hygeine standards are world class.

I was recently back in Korea to visit family for a month and I discovered that I have an intollerance to chicken that causes intestinal pain, gas, and diarrhea. I haven't tested yet to see if it has continued back home yet (I've only been back for a week). I'm wondering if you might have the same thing. I did some research and it actually seems to be a common food intollerance. Some say that it could be due to the hormones and antibiotics that they use in raising the poultry.

I have had it twice here in 3 years. My friend had it terribly after eating seafood with her co-teacher. My co-teacher and her sister had it a couple of weeks ago and ended up in hospital for their Chuseok vacation. What was interesting was the fact that the restaurant owner came to the hospital with gifts to say sorry!
When it happened to me it was my 'weak system.'

As an aside, today on the subway I was surprised to see a young lass cough and cover her mouth using the back of her hand, then wipe her hand with an antiseptic wipe. I thought it was refreshing to see that some amongst us maintain standards of hygiene, remaining dapper and fragrant even when forced to share our travel arrangements with the common people, whose infections fly about them like the stinking mists of time.

I've only had bad food poisoning here once, in my first year. It was a risotto at some quasi-Italian restaurant in Ulsan.

I've had a couple of one-day fever and upset bowel episodes in the last six months (no throwing up or anything though) and one was definitely due to raw oysters (big surprise) while the other was two days after arriving back in Korea after 4 years away, and it was something my mother-in-law served me, but I have no idea what. No-one else got sick on either occasion, so I have a feeling it was my lack of tolerance to something.

Never had full blown food poisoning, but I did more often than not have the runs likely brought on by low grade Korean booze and gruel-esque, sloppy cuisine.

Agree with the second part of the statement for sure. At various times of the year South Korea could pass for a 100,000 km.sq sized petri dish. Just cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze FFS. Most of us elsewhere learned to do it when we were infants....even in China. Shocked

I've had food poisoning a few times in my life, but never in my 14 months here in Korea. I'm sure it exists (it does everywhere), but it doesn't seem to be much more prevalent than in any other country I've lived in.

Col pop is popcorn chicken served in a cup on top of a cup of cola. It's usually sold at bunshik joints near elementary schools.

I've had food poisoning twice here. Once from a yogurt drink a coworker gave me, and another time from eating raw fish banchan. Other than that, I've been okay. I'd never had it before Korea, though.

I think the poster means Col-pop; that fake chicken and cola combo. Little chicken squares on top of a cola. I don't think that's chicken, not sure what it is.
