|
|
so im currently located in korea and i have my fbi CBC with me with no apostille. i've heard that i can get an apostille from the US embassy in seoul for my CBC rather than an apostille from the US. FYI: im on the F-4 visa so i dont need the CBC for immigration but rather for the ministry of education once i start working. anyone know if the affidaivt really works?? |

You heard wrong. The Embassy will not and cannot apostille your background check. As a matter of fact, the check you now have is worthless for use in South Korea. Your immediate concern is FAQ 9:
Quote: |
Does the FBI provide apostilles*?
(*An apostille is a certification that a document has been legalized or authenticated by the issuing agency through a process in which various seals are placed on the document.)
The CJIS Division will authenticate U.S. Department of Justice Order 556-73 fingerprint search results for international requests by placing the FBI seal and the signature of a division official on the results if requested at the time of submission. Documents prepared in this way may then be sent to the U.S. Department of State by the requestor to obtain an apostille if necessary. This procedure became effective on January 25, 2010 and will apply only to documents finalized after that date. Requests to authenticate previously processed results will not be accepted. This procedure replaces the letter formerly provided by the CJIS Division that indicated the service was not provided. Note: FBI-approved Channelers cannot provide an apostille. A request for your FBI Identification Record must be submitted directly to the FBI if an apostille is needed. |
So, you need to request another check and this time be sure to include a letter, with your signature, requesting that the background check be signed by a Division Officer. Once you receive that background check and DO's signature, you will have to send it to the State Department's Office of Authentication, following the instructions here. |

If your CBC has a seal and signature from the FBI, you can send it to be apostilled, if not you have to send out for another CBC. Make sure that you include a letter stating you want a seal and signature on the CBC.
Does anybody here understand why the FBI doesn't just place the seal and signature on all of them? Especially given the time it take to get the CBC. I thought that this type of crappy cost cutting was only endemic to Thailand. |
