Had it once in 11 years but it was a real bad case of food poisoning.
However, let's not go overboard here, food poisoning leaves you feeling horrible but is not incapacitating for 4 of 5 days. |
Oh yes it can, and it's happened to me. Not in Korea, mind you, but I was laid up for a week after a dinner of raw oysters on the half-shell and steak tartare. |
I had stomach flu a few times (esp sincwe we had kids) and that knocked me on my butt for 4-5 days (bad cases).
Your case of food poisoning sounds horrid Son Deureo!! Good christ...
I also think a lot of people confuse food poisoning with indigestion and with stomach flu. On one of our recent trips to Korea our kids got stomach flu at the Kids Cafe (we were in Korea that time in December). That was a fun 4 days.
I go a bad case of the stomach flu from my daughter last year, she caught it at her daycare. It happens, it is not fun.
As for what alongway said, I agree! Our son got an allergic reaction in a restaurant in Seoul last summer. We asked the waitress what was on his pizza and it ended up that they put something our son was mildly allergic to (red spot on his face and small pimples). Well the restaurant owner came out and took my son and wife to the nearest clinic, paid for the consultation, paid for the shot they gave our son and paid for the medication at the pharmacy. The meal was not charged for anyone (4 people). |

| Clearly there are different levels of food poisoning. Just like you can have a mild cold or a bad cold. I've have a mild case of food poisoning here, and one that took almost a full week to fully recover from. |

lol you've been here 13 years and never had the runs? unless you're a cyborg, i highly doubt that.
that said, i was in the hospital almost 3 years ago with colitis from something i ate, it was either from McD's or a fried chicken spot. either way, spending 3 nights in a korean hospital was probably the worst thing i've experienced. |

You can leave Korea out of it totally and still say that is a very impressive stretch for anywhere . |

In fact, Schwa, call Guiness, I pretty sure you hold the world record. |

Surprised the beer never did it to you. For most people there I knew drinking a pitcher of Cass or Hite was on par with drinking a gallon of drain cleaner. |

Korea's super clean.
Have you considered that the 5,000 won/meal places might not be the most hygienic places to eat? Just like they wouldn't be in any country? |

I have had it twice here in 3 years. My friend had it terribly after eating seafood with her co-teacher. My co-teacher and her sister had it a couple of weeks ago and ended up in hospital for their Chuseok vacation. What was interesting was the fact that the restaurant owner came to the hospital with gifts to say sorry!
When it happened to me it was my 'weak system.'
As an aside, today on the subway I was surprised to see a young lass cough and cover her mouth using the back of her hand, then wipe her hand with an antiseptic wipe. I thought it was refreshing to see that some amongst us maintain standards of hygiene, remaining dapper and fragrant even when forced to share our travel arrangements with the common people, whose infections fly about them like the stinking mists of time. |
do you wear your shoes in the house? yuck. |

That's because bars here usually don't clean the pipes properly. The wolfhound does, as do several other in Itaewon, but the majority don't. They just use water to rinse them out. We had to order tap and pipe cleaner from Amazon for friends who own a bar here, because the stuff just isn't sold in Korea. If you're drinking tap, drink cider, as it's more acidic and is (mostly) self cleaning. Better yet: drink cocktails or from bottles. |

Maybe not only the 5000 Won places. In August, I was in the bathroom of a TGIF. I was washing my hands. The employee, who had just used the toilet, came out of the stall and went out the door.
Not only food places. The same thing happened at the dentist.
Unless they have a secret hand washing machine that customers are not allowed to see ... |
