People have been complaining about this for years now. The argument against updating went something like: "the database is at this point so massive and unwieldy that porting it to other software would be a nightmare".

Thing is: the forums don't really serve any purpose other than to generate search engine hits. The real money comes from the job boards.

Personally, I feel the database could do with a little trimming. There are six year-old sales in the Buy, Sell and Trade forums. Rolling Eyes

And that line of thinking is slowly killing the income potential of this site.

The forum and job area are under different control anyway. Rumors I heard were that after a hack on this site brought it down around 2004, costing Dave money, the korean forum was sort of sold off to a mod and put on a different server than jobs.

Its old and clunky and annoying, but there are things I like about it:

First of all, the redditization of the internet hasn't reached Dave's. There's no up and down voting. No explicit popularity contest. Just comments.

Second of all, Dave's saves everything. This may not be valuable for the Buy, Sell forum, but its crazy to go back to the Current Events forum for the Iraq War and read the board. This has some value.

Here are things I don't like:

Time to bring back image privileges. The mods have become more heavy-handed since the cowboy days when the image was once, I repeat, ONLY ONCE, abused to post inappropriate, offensive material. Basically, the trolls didn't just win, they conquered Dave's and mounted a 5-year triumph.

Secondly, [self-censored].

I like this as well. I'd like the site better, though, if there weren't the constant impending threat of a moderator banning you for saying something "unprofessional" (read: politically or socially unpopular). I don't really care if General or Job-Related have some strict moderation, but some forums (especially C.E.) should really be left to police themselves for the most part. If someone starts getting too kooky/offensive/whatever, others can just ignore them.

You can't trust people like the deaf guy that killed those privileges with scat porn- Dan the Chainsaw man. He is one of those people that lives for revenge, no life, etc. After they booted him from this site, he posted some sick stuff. It sucks, and they should be able to allow trusted people to post images, (remember the photo contests?) but it won't happen until they update the s/w.

Was the perpetrator ever caught?

I seem to remember a certain poster talking about that attack for a period of time before it happened.

I have no idea. It sure was effective, though!

Rumors eh?

Got a bit more in the way of information than this vague reference to some uber-mod who bought this forum? Laughing

Seriously swampie, why would a mod (or anyone) buy this forum to support it on another server? It would cost more to maintain that any "revenue" it might generate.

The site (Daves) would get is $$$ from the job board and the ads. The discussion forum(s) are not really profit generating.

All this being said, a software upgrade would be badly needed but I suspect these forums will be shut down before that actually happens unless the owner (Dave) sees profit in updating the software.

I agree that it wouldn't make sense to run the forums as a seperate business to the rest of the site. However, I disagree that the forums aren't profit generating. For without the forums, there will be no profit from the other areas of the site. The reason the job board is so popular is because the forum drives the traffic there.

That's the reason I highly doubt Davey Boy sold the forum to a Mod.

I think you may be right that the forum affects the revenues of the job site but people will look for jobs first and have no need to come here (forum) to peruse the job site.

Do you mean the unmoderated disaster that was this site for a while? That was indeed crazy!

And Kudos to the mods for not allowing this site to descend into a cesspit of hate. Cheers Koharski, best mod ever.

Bumping up old threads is great, I especially love when somebody responds to a nearly decade-old post by a poster who hasn't even been here for five years. It's also nice that even the most unorthodox opinion results in the thread being bumped up to the very top instead of being buried in the bottom by downvotes.

Also agreed. No rep and no voting, but the ability to embed images and videos would serve the board well.
