|
|
I've heard from a co worker that we'll be working on Chirstmas day this year. Isn't Christmas Day a national holiday here? I've never worked Christmas Day and of course would prefer not too.
Is it normal for private schools to be open on Christmas? :/ |

A fair few Hagwons make their NET's dress up. Male's are normally santa (or elf's if too short).
It is more likely that you will be asked to go around in your costumes and sing some carols and hand out fliers about your Hagwon....
At least the costume should keep you warm - it get's a bit nippy in Dec!
If you are lucky they might let you choose your costume? ask! |

Haha, that did make me laugh, but fortunately, at least with my academy, I know that it will be teaching.
Apparently they are giving us the 26th off instead but for me I'm pretty annoyed about it. I'm not overtly religious, but I am a bit of a traditionalist and working on Christmas is a big no no. |

LOL why not just give you the 25th off? It's pretty common for most academies to just have festivities the day or week before. |

This is exactly what I thought. Why cause problems by taking away the 25th, and then giving us the 26th off.
Though my academy operates a monday/thursday or tuesday/friday schedule for students, while Wednesday is a less important day where we offer free classes for the students who want it.
Common sense would say just move the tuesday classes to the wednesday.
We're a pretty big academy with 11 foreign teachers, all of whom are pretty annoyed with this news! |

what's your contract say? But yes it is a national holiday, and it's very odd to try and make you work that day. I can't imagine many students would want to come in nor would their parents make them come in. |

IF your contract says that you get national holidays off, then you have that day off. They cannot legally force you to work that day.
IF your contract says nothing about national holidays, they still have to pay you extra for working on that day, at your overtime rate, on top of your monthly salary, in accordance with the LSA.
If my boss even tries it, even mentions it once, it's a flat-out 'no.' |

Sounds ridiculous to me!
I can't imagine your contract not saying anything about having national holidays off. I suppose it's possible, but I've never heard of it or seen one that doesn't mention them. And I doubt 11 foreigners would miss its inclusion or not care if it wasn't stated clearly.
I'd say solidarity is the way to go. If everyone is unhappy then you should go together as a group to make your feelings known or have one person write a letter and get everyone to sign it.
If only one person approaches your boss(es)/director(s), they risk being labeled as 'the difficult one', which might have negative ramifications in the future. |

Because the boss sees it as a money-making scheme to have the kids show up all day--or at various times throughout the day--on a national holiday when the kids aren't going to their regular school. Yet another data point to show that some hagweon owners think only "babysitting time = money" and couldn't care less about either education or their employees. |

True this. If they've picked you out a costume for Halloween, that's a pretty good indicator of what Christmas will be like.
When I worked at Reading Town, nothing happened at either holiday.
But at Wonderland last year, they gave all three male foreign teachers dresses to wear on Halloween. An American man had to be Snow White. They made him wear a blonde wig too. I used my dress as a mandress and put a rag on my head and went in as a sheik. The Australian guy put on a hood with his dress and was the Grim Reaper. Predictably, the guy who was Snow White ended up having to be Santa during Christmas and a bloody mad cow on another occasion. |

Everything I've seen and heard about Wonderland makes me "wonder" why anyone would work there. |

If you're from North America, look at the silver lining. At least you'll be getting off work at the same time your relatives back home are getting up to check their stockings. Just trying to cheer you up.
I'd gladly substitute teach for you for a day's pay in a heartbeat, bro, if Immi allowed it. But maybe I'll be working on Christmas also. I haven't heard yet. As the only foreign teacher at my school, I'll probably end up being Jewish Santa Claus this year. |
