It's because the CIM are secretly funding www.whatthebook.com -- hey! who put that link there! I certainly didn't!

Pretty soon, www.whathebook.com (there it is again!) will rival Hyundai...and maybe even Samsung. Pretty soon, there will be no stopping its force, nor its destructive power.

Let us pray.

PS - Wifey told me that the lady at Abby's was really nice to her when she sold a few copies of the cowboy pulps I'm so idiotically fond of, and if that counts as an endorsement, so be it. I'd probably endorse Hitler if he told me my daughter was cute.

Yeah the woman there has always been friendly and helpful. And thanks for the counter heads up on the Japanese author.

Yeah, I've been to both What the Book and Abby's Book Nook, personally, I like What the Book better, I've gotten quite a few good books from there, its just nice to sit and have a nice cup of coffee and look over the books they have there. I mean, true, its not like used book stores back home in Canada, but for Korea its pretty good.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth! Smile

Hi Zed,

Not sure about your posts. But a few posts were deleted due to the fact that it was talking about personal info about the owner of Abbey's and it seemed inappropriate. Other stuff, not certain of.

Hoping to see you on Sunday at Aju U. 12 noon for ball hockey!

Have you lost your mind or are you trying to be nice? She is the biggest *beep* on the planet.

I'm pretty sure the "her" that The Harpster was referring to here is the little girl, daughter of the couple who owns the store, whose name is, um ... Abby.

And she is a sweetheart, no bout a doubt it.

Cool

As far as I know, the sweet little daughter from Abby's booknook is with her father in the U.S. Like, as in, the store isn't run by a couple anymore. I noticed that the husband always gave me more money for my books. After he left, the wife was like, "I'll give you 13,000 for your 15 books." I was like...um, no. I'll go down to the other bookstore where I get a decent rate and I'll spend my money there, too, while I'm at it.

I think Abby's has a better selection of newer books, but that's mostly because all us wae-gooks have been taking our books there. I'm sure whatthebook will start having similar selection choices...wait, what am I trying to say? Ok. Here: whatthebook, for a long time, has had a lot of OLD books. Like, the books are more than 10 years old, so the covers are that same bland, off-white color. I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but I love looking at the jackets of books. I'm thinking specifically of the sci-fi/fantasy section. Maybe it's different now, but I really like reading books that have come out in the last 5 years, especially in this genre.

That said, I'm sure it will only get better. Oh, the shelves are more difficult to move at whatthebook. They don't slide very well. Abby's seems to be more relaxed in atmosphere.

That's all I can think of for now.

How did I miss this topic for so long???? I would like to thank everyone who has posted nice things about the store and even those who critized the store. It will help me make my store better for you guys.

To answer some of your questions/comments:

Sci-Fi and Fantasy is the most difficult genre to get used books. The people who read these books tend to hold on to them. In fact, the older books that I have actually cost me about 4 times the amount of the general ficiton when I bought them in the states. Trade ins are almost non-existant here in Korea for those as well.

Will try to do something about getting the shelves a little bit easier to move.

Tiberious aka Sparkles- I have no idea what you have against me with your smart as* comments about me and my store.

As for the new books stocked in the store, there is a reason behind that. One thing I have noticed is that people do not generally trade in their "good" books. This is why I started bringing them in. There is no need to pay too much for new books anymore, as our internet site stocks about a million titles. Please check it out and let me know your comments.

Yes, I would have to say that Abbey's has a better selection of used non-fiction. This is something that we are working on Very Happy .

I have been considering bringing magazines over here to Korea. Charging only the regular cover price for them. Should start doing that in the next couple of weeks. Any suggestions?

Yes both of our stores do not compare to used bookstores back home. And yes, this is because we ARE in Korea! You should see the hoops you have to jump through to import used books here. There is some crazy ministry that had to certify that my books were not detrimental to minors....Thy Brothers Wife had to be destroyed at customs simply because of the title.

As for her not making crap on the new paperbacks she is bringing in is total horse sh** There are several men working for some kind of book distributor in Korea that have been trying to sell us books. They will not give us a PO and it is cash only....Make your own assumptions.

I'll be bringing in all my sci-fi/fantasy stuff in the next few months. Heading home for good and these 100+ novels won't be going with me. Very Happy
