Quote:
The teacher, a 29-year-old single man, started to have sex with the girl months after he began teaching at an elementary school in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, late last year.

Police launched an investigation after their relationship was revealed. However, the girl asked police not to punish him, saying she had sex because she loved him.

The teacher could face charges of sexual assault and rape of a minor. However, police had to drop the case at her request. Their names were not disclosed due to privacy issues.

I wonder if this will affect his future as a teacher.

Next time the apologists on here say there's no crime in Korea, or that kids have nothing to fear at schools here (unlike the US) or that crimes are not covered up here, can we have a link to this?

I realize this is one case, and I'm not saying it's everywhere. But it's indicative of so many of the problems that are present in Korea.

Yes, she did. In fact, if I remember correctly she had the baby in prison, but I speak under correction. They got married after she got out but yea still got jail time.

I thought even if it was voluntary with a girl under 16 the guy is still breaking the law.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Asia
South Korea
According to the Section 305 of the Criminal Law of the Republic of Korea, a person who engages in a sexual intercourse with a female minor, but not a male minor, who is under 16 years of age, regardless of Korean age reckoning, is guilty of rape and shall be fined and punished by penal labor for the duration that exceeds 3 years (the Criminal Law specifically states to punish a person who raped a female minor or adult, which means engaging in a voluntary or involuntary sexual intercourse with a male minor or adult is a Criminal Law definition of rape in either case.)[61] If a person sexually harassed a female or male minor without engaging in a sexual intercourse, the person shall be punished by penal labor for the duration up to 10 years or fined up to 15 million won.

Because it's up to the victim whether or not her attacker is prosecuted. The teacher may have privately made a deal with the family to pay a certain amount of money in exchange for not pressing charges.

No it is not. Adult having sexual intercourse with a minor will be prosecuted. It doesn't matter if they live together in a relationship, both willingly participated or even have a child together etc.
Wife says she is an orphan or some sort so no parents and obviously she has some issues due to this fact and he took advantage of it. The guy will face prosecution.

The article said:

"In the girls case, police couldnt bring any charges against the teacher because she didnt want him to be punished."

I posted in the previous thread on this - disgusting behaviour. Can't figure out why this guy is not being arrested. He needs, at a minimum, jail time.

I honestly fear what would happen to all you fine people teaching there in South Korea had this been a foreign, white or black, man. I have friends there. I lived in South Korea for a long time in the past. I know what would have happened, sort of. It would have been a big deal.

How can I express this enough? Those who know will understand. Koreans would freak out. No question. A foreigner sexing a child?

Oh dear. This would be big news for a very long time and would affect foreigners trying to get work. Guaranteed.

What was that guy's name? He helped changed policy.

The key in Korea (not to mention China, Japan and other Asian countries) is to SHAME authorities into taking action. This monster who had sex with a minor needs to be put away for good.

Expats, the next time a Korean tells you that he or she feels Korea is an "advanced" country, bring this up and see what the response is.

Disgusting, UTTERLY DISGUSTING.
