One thing you'll notice after living here for a while... the old people do A LOT of work that I just don't see younger generations having an interest in. From cleaning for the gov't, to picking-up the recycled cardboard, to fixing general stuff not many in younger generations seem to be learning (trades)... I could go on and on.

I just wonder...

...Hopefully the government will spend tax money on providing trash cans and refuse collection.

And also provide some sort of social welfare for old folks so they don't have to do that kind of stuff.

Outsource it to cheap, imported brownskins. Either that or have local criminals turned into forced labor.

Hopefully this means we'll get better Mexican food.

That's what national debts are for. If the young people don't want to pay for their elders, the older generation can have the government borrow the money and make the kids pay for it down the road.

not a bad idea, but that is actually what is going to cause bigger problems later. not saying the cdn system is perfect, but koreans need to pay more tax. actually, they should've been paying more taxes about 50 yrs ago - the problems they'll face in 40 yrs will pale in comparison to those they have now. hindsight and all.

Yeah, the solution is always more government. Damn the Korean government for not taking as much wealth from those who earned it as Canada! [/sarcasm]

Maybe they'll actually come up with a better system than just throwing all the nasty trash all over the road. One of my least favorite things about Korea.

You mean picking fruit and harvesting veggies in places like Canada or the US come harvest time? Most locals would not be caught dead doing it. The response: imported seasonal workers. I suspect Korea will do the same and in fact this exists in Korea already with the DDD workers.

This. Korea is already seeing the early stages of it.

There's a lot of crappy jobs around, I can't imagine your average university graduate wanting to be a waitress in a kimbap nara.

Its a shame because every job that needs doing.. is worth doing well.

Nobody should be looked down on.

Food servers are as important to society as are doctors. We need both.

I'd love for people to get paid better and have better conditions at service jobs.

One gets tired of the ndless revolving door of new staff every other day, who don't have a clue what they're doing.

The human brain is capable of infinitely more than your job descripton, whatever it may be.

A person is much more than their job. Its who you are, not what you do.

Westerners recognize the above, Koreans tend not to. They view their job as a large part of their identity, and feel shame at work that is associated with lower social status.

Those places will have to change or die. They'll need to reinvent themselves into a more popular young-style chain, or they will gradually disappear.

Getting people to work there will just one of their problems, if they don't

I just see taxes going up and up. A lot of the jobs the older generations do are being done for absolute peanuts. Something like... what... 1,500 an hour? I'm not sure. I know kids will work all day at a job to make what we can make teaching privates for an hour.

point taken, and that is actually one of the main reasons i dont regret leaving canada. having said that, there r some things i miss about the place; almost always cleaner air, more space, and what seems to b better healthcare for those canadian coddled babies. korea is a nice in-between place that could b much better than canada if it improved in some of the areas already mentioned in this thread. what's ur solution, mr. disestablishment?
