|
|
I just had some really great curry at a restaurant in Itaewon called Taj Palace. Their butter chicken curry is among the best I have ever tried. Their nan was light and crispy, just the right match for the flavorful curry sauce.
The staff were so kind and attentive coming to my table at regular intervals to make sure my water glass was full and everything was alright.
I am so pleased, so I thought I'd pass on the word to the Dave's ESL community.
Taj Palace is a 3 minute walk from Itaewon station. Take exit #3, pass Starbucks and walk to the corner where you see a clothing store. Turn right and walk past 4 or 5 shops and you'll see it on the right (2nd floor).
The place is popular, so it's good to call ahead. 02-777-5786

Enjoy! |

The only thing I would say about Taj Palace is that you should go when you can get the buffet, otherwise it's very expensive for that kind of food. When is the buffet available?
As for your review, how much does it cost and you also need to work on giving directions. Hint- it's more than a "3 minute walk" unless you run like a madman.

A clothing store? There's been an Aussie restaurant on that corner for a while, now.

You need to pass a side street and then it's 4-5 shops.
BTW, giving out phone numbers doesn't help much in Korea when most of the time the people on the other end probably speak very little English. Websites are a much bigger help. |

I've been there a bunch of times, and I have to agree that their buffet is good. The problem I have with every Indian buffet I've been to though is that they're stingy with the naan. I get that it's labour intensive to roll out that bread, but to me a buffet means you let customers eat as much as they want of something. Taj Palace isn't too bad about giving more naan, but some I've been to give me a dirty look when I ask for a third serving of it and take their sweet time making it too. |

Plug the phone number into either Daum's or Naver's map site. You'll get the address:
서울
용산구
이대원1동 132-2
Seoul
Yongsan-Gu
Itaeweon 1 Dong 132-2
If you're into the new address system (as everyone should be by now), it's:
서울
용산구
우사단로39
Seoul
Yongsan-Gu
Usadan-Ro 39
Go out Exit 3 of Itaeweon Station, walk East (away from the Army base), turn right at the corner with the Fire Station (the local shops and restaurants may change, but the firehouse is likely to be there for ages), walk South (uphill) a little more than one block. The place is on your right.
I concur with the previous poster about the buffet. The food was great and, for a buffet, the price was reasonable. Sorry, I can't recall how much I paid for my companion and me.

It's amazing the amount of websites that don't have active links to good usable maps.
In this day and age there's no excuse. All they have to do is have a link to Naver or Daum Road view. |

You make a very good point here. Thanks for your posting.
The next time I eat there, I will mention it. Or you can if you go. |

I just hit Taj Palace last night. It was great! The food and service are still excellent. |

The owner is/was a Muslim guy who had literature explaining why Muslims don't eat pork or drink alcohol. According to the pamphlet, if you drink alcohol or eat pork, you will pork your sister and piss in your pants, as Americans and people in Mumbai are known to do.
I asked him about the pamphlet, and he was unapologetic about it.
So yeah, food's decent, but being told I nail my sister because I drink sticks in my craw. PLENTY of other Indian places around Itaewon that don't proselytize with racist crap like that. |

I've eaten there many times and they have never been anything other than classy and professional.
So, I find your experience with them to be unusual. |

Don't misunderstand me - they were professional. But on the rack, by the door, there were the pamphlets I mentioned. When I asked the owner about them, he was friendly enough about it, and I didn't push the issue with him. I simply asked if they were his, if he believed everything that was in there, if the parts about drinking were a bit inflamatory. He was friendly about it, no doubt about that.
I'm sure I'm one of the only people who noticed them or said anything about it because 1) who reads the stuff sitting on dusty racks in the corner and 2) it did NOT say any of this in Korean, ONLY in the English version.
All I'm saying is that he had literature I didn't agree with, and the food is no better than a lot of other places I've been to in Itaewon, so I generally don't go there. |

LOL, I don't think I'll be going there after what you wrote. I probably wouldn't like the owner and I don't like to give money to people I don't like. |

That puts me off going there. I have a local Indian place that I love. Nowhere else has been better, imho. |

Are you sure they won't spell the Korean addresses properly? |

I went to this place with an Indian guy and Pakistani, they both loved it.
The lamb and chicken dishes ranged from not too spicy to adequately spicy for everyone, however the vegetable options were lackluster and they seemed reluctant to bring more naans.
Overall, given the quality of meat dishes (what I like most) and the reasonable buffet price, I would go again. |
