It is my understanding that you should always sign the contract before you leave. however, I have also heard that only the Korean contract is valid. What gives? Is the contract we sign and agree to here even valid?

I suppose that to get your E2 visa in your country, you need to have your contract to take to the embassy/consulate, otherwise they won't issue you the visa. The alternative is to come here on another visa, find a job, and then do a visa run to Japan.

My contract had a clause in it stating that in case of discrepancy between the English version and the Korean version of the contract, the Korean one would supersede the English one. Try and have a Korean speaker look at both if you're worried.

I can't address the validity issue.
