|
|
My contract finishes this spring but I will be going right into graduate school.
I've heard that I can easily switch my E-2 to a D-2 but that the pension money stays in the pot.
Is there a way to leave and withdraw the money without canceling the new D-2? Or is there another option (returning before getting a D-2 and applying for it from scratch)? |

You need to cancel your current status of sojourn to enable you to get your pension money out (assuming you mean the NPS).
The ONLY way to do that is leave, turn in your ARC and return on your new D2.

So would it be possible to do the paperwork for the D-2, leave Korea and let my E-2 finish, and then come back and process the D-2 without having to do all of the criminal background stuff, etc.? |

You don't need any CBC stuff for a student visa.
Yes.
Process the D2 stuff (gather the paperwork).
Leave Korea.
Hand in your ARC on the way out (closing your E2 status of sojourn).
While you are out, get your D2 from a consulate.
Return on your D2.
Collect your pension.
Enjoy yourself.

Wow, thanks for the info (as always!)
And my credit cards should still be ok too right? Or will it be one of those cases that they will last until they expire, and then I won't be able to renew because I won't be on a working visa?
And can I just say I lost my ARC? It's the old kind so I kind of have (dumb) sentimental feelings about it. |

C/Cs will be fine. You should get a new ARC on your D2.
"lose it, go to immigration and apply for a new one. Cost you 20k plus the delivery fee. Do it ASAP since it will take a couple weeks to get the replacement.
Unless there is time remaining you will be fined (100k) for not handing it in when you depart.
If there is time remaining and you don't hand it in then you won't cancel your status, may not get your refund or the new D2 (since you will still have a valid visa).
