Anyone recently heard of or gotten a visa for 13 months? I've had two visas before now and both say "01Y." The one I got this week has "13M" under the Period of Sojourn block. Is it possible that Korean Immigration has finally figured out how to avoid the annoyance (for all concerned) of having to extend one's ARC for a few days at the end of every contract? I guess I'll see when I get my next ARC and it actually expires on or after the last day of my contract.
Anyway, it gives me (tentative) hope that bureaucrats are teachable. |

Yes, they have gotten the message and now issue new E2s for 13 months.
Extensions however only last until the last date of the contract.

I think you're mistaken there, as the extended date on my ARC is 13 months from my re-sign date. |

Then I stand corrected.

Wow. Well, then this just seems, on the order of miracles, to fall second only to the Resurrection, only this one seems to be actually real. Granted, I'll only truly believe when I put my finger(s) onto the actual non-hole of dates on my card, but it seems hopeful. Sweet.
What Korean Immi miracle are we predicting next? A visa not shackled to a specific employer? The registration in a database of our immaculately verified documents so that we don't have to produce them again, each time we change jobs? Or am I smiting the stone with such speculation, asking for seasonings with my manna, a little less fire in that daytime pillar?
(Sorry, once I latch onto a metaphor, it's hard to let go.) |

Is anyone ever given a visa of over 12/13 months? I'm curious about how they end up correcting the problem of having runners leaving part of the way through their contract and then having the replacement on a 12 month cycle, and eventually creeping toward completely nonstandard start dates.
It seems like having someone start with a contract that goes, say 16 months from May would put them in a position of being released in Sept when the new semesters start, and would be a good thing for teachers and schools both (as the teacher could turn around and get a new job). |

My boss just told me that the 13 months means nothing. Apparently that's only so you can keep working while the new paperwork is filed but I can't stay in Korea after I'm done working.
My boss said I have to apply for a tourist visa in order to stay because he's required to inform the Immigration Office that I won't be working anymore.
I hate to rain on parades, but better now than at the airport when they won't let you out.
I'm going to call 02-1345 and get it from the horse's mouth. I suggest you all do the same. Different nationalities, different years, different rules. |

He still might be right in the sense when you complete the 12 month contract with him, you are done. That 13th month is optional if you both agree, if not, you need to find another school. He is likely to do nothing during the 13th month if he knows you are transferring. As long as he doesn't have to pay. |

Could you please post here what you hear from them just the same? I'm under the impression one can stay for that additional month, as long as one stops working at the end of the contract. Thank you for passing along any info you receive.
It doesn't really make sense, does it? Not that it would necessarily make sense. But I mean, say you work your last day on a Monday. You're supposed to apply for a tourist visa so you can get to the airport on Tuesday? Doesn't seem to make sense.
Does anyone know if people at that number 02-1345 are able to speak English? |

If you are planning on leaving the country YES.
If by Tuesday you mean the day after the last day of the contract (end of the 12th month), YES. (You had all that time to prepare).
If by Tuesday you mean 1 month after the 12th (to bring into effect a full 13th month, YES. (The owner doesn't want to be responsible for the 13th month).
I think you are reading too much into it though. It would be optional. OPTIONAL. If I were the owner and you didn't tell me about a new school I would sever ties. If you had another school to work at, then I would work towards transferring.
They will say NO to any help until they know there is another school. That's the way it is done. If you don't say anything, the expectation is that you leave the country.
I get that all the time. The school tells me, "You have to leave city/country.", then I find a new school and then to get a move out date we usually agree on transferring. That way they know when I will leave. |

Thanks YTMND,
But now you mean I don't even have like 7 or 10 days or something after contract completion to get to immigration and request the 30 day tourist extension? I will still have two or three weeks left on my ARC after the contract end date. The immigration office (which I've never had occasion to go to) is in another distant city. |

Yes, the rules might allow you to stay in Korea because of your ARC card, but what good does that do if you are living in the streets because your employer kicked you out of the apartment? Are you going to foot the bill for a goshiwon, hotel, unnecessary procrastinating expense?
I have always changed my visa status before a contract period in Japan, Korea, and now China (I just recently did it in December and handed in grades after I moved out). |

I have a friend to stay with and I would like to stay at their place anyway until a few days before my ARC expiration. Until just recently I thought I was going to extend my contract, but plans changed. Now I'm trying to figure out for sure if I need to apply for a tourist visa extension or if the employer just needs to notifiy immigration and then I'm still allowed to stay until my ARC expiration date. Confused. |
