So, it's that time of year and my school is doing my tax for me. As I always have, I brought in my check card/credit card statement and gave it to the admin lady in charge.

However, last week, I was reading the January issue of 10 Magazine which had an article about tax deductions. It stated that up to 3 million won of rental payments are deductable if you are not anyone's dependent. I asked the admin lady to check into this, and brought my lease and a document from my local 주민센터 proving my address. However this lady is now saying that on the school's system (it's Gangnam Public School), that I am registered as 세대원 (a dependent), and it cannot be changed to 세대주 (the main wage earner). Apparently all foreigners are listed as dependents in the system, and are therefore ineligible to claim this deduction.

I have always had my own apartment and paid my own rent. I've been here for 5 years so I'm not in the tax-less period.

Does anyone have any further information or advice on this? It seems to be a big lot of bs to me. I'm trying to walk a line between pushing (encouraging?) the admin lady to look into this properly, and not alienating her. It sounds like she really can't change the system, but why is it like this?! I haven't been anyone's dependent since I was 21 years old.

Edit: I heard it was possible to lodge your own tax, so maybe I could get around the school's system. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is it worth it? The last few years I've only gotten small refunds, so I live pretty close to the line on coming out with a bill.

I just saw this other thread http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=225604 and I have emailed the foreigner tax advocate service with a query about eligibility. Any other info that anyone has about this particular situation is appreciated.
