I've seen this topic has been covered for those working in Korea with a spouse of the same nationality, but my question is a little different. I am American and my wife is Japanese. Is it possible, if I am teaching in Korea with an E-2 visa, to get a spouse visa for my wife to stay with me?

I use to teach in Korea before I got married and I'd like to got back to teaching there with my wife now, but I have to make sure it's possible for us to stay together in Korea.

My wife is on an F-3 visa and she has had no problem renewing every year.

If you are here on an E2 then her nationality is not relevant. You simply need to show proof of familial relationship (marriage certificate). She will get an F3 (dependent family) visa.

Does your wife have a bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Japan? If so, she can look for jobs teaching Japanese, of course getting the correct visa/immigration permission to do that. I've no idea what that would pay, but it's a safe bet that it pays more than not working.

Good, thanks for the confirmation. As for her teaching Japanese, maybe she will if she can find that, but we're counting on me teaching English, because I know I can find a job teaching. She does have a 4 year degree but it's not in teaching.

F3 till you get settled. Easy to do.

For the future, with a degree from a Japanese Uni, a Japanese passport and a clean police check she can, if she can find a hagwon who teaches Japanese, get work and get an E2 as a Japanese teacher. (she will need her documents translated to either English or Korean.

Doesn't matter what your job is; if she's on a spousal visa, she's unemployable legally. What you're looking for is how she can get legal work. Bachelor's Degree in any subject from an accredited university in one's home country = eligible to teach the language of one's home country. She'll have to get, as ttom mentioned, her own visa for that.

I figured she could get work as a Japanese teacher if she tried, but I assume it's harder than finding work as an English teacher. But, I don't know because I've never looked for work as a Japanese teacher.

One issue I'm thinking about is what to put on my application for teaching jobs. I don't remember if they ask if you're single or married.

This was kind of balsy, but I sent an email to the school director of the hagwon I use to work at to ask him if he was looking for any teachers to hire this year and if I could return with my wife to work for the school again. He emailed me back and said they hired all the teachers they need for this year and that it would be "difficult" to live in the teacher dorms with my wife.

So apparently it's not acceptable for me to bring my wife along with me, unless she was also working at the school. I guess I can understand why in this case because this hagwon has a dorm building for the teachers and they all share a kitchen and lounge area and it's not really fair for them to share it with my wife if she's not working there. Personally I don't think they would have any problem.

So when I start applying for jobs should I just act as if I'm on my own and my wife can join me later when she get's her F3 visa? I know a lot of teachers live in apartments rather than dorms like the school I use to work at so it shouldn't be a problem for my wife to live with me later. I assume...

sidenote: when are EPIK applications due for fall?
