So, what I'm learning is that schools refuse to pay for any part of your flight to Korea if you are joining their school from inside Korea. The reason being that they are paying "extra" by sending you to Japan as well because your E-2 was not processed before you came.

Is the wool being pulled over my eyes here? Prospective employer refused to reimburse any ticket as it costs to have me flown out on a visa run. After locking horns for an hour, the best offer was 500k portion of a one-way ticket reimbursed.

What are your thoughts? I'm not interested in being greedy. A one-way ticket reimbursed seemed fair to me, regardless of whether I'm already in Korea or not.

(and the bonus question: how much was your flight to Korea. Mine was 1.6 return. Is this an outrageous price?)

Tip from The Urban Myth: If you work in smaller cities, schools tend to be more desperate to have a foreigner at their school. My current school is paying my ticket (in installments) even though I was already in Korea and had been for 10 days.

This "extra" nonsense is just that, nonsense. If you came from the West then they would still have to pay for both your plane ticket and visa run anyway.

PS. Mine was 1.5 return.

I could answer yes to every question in your poll. One for each of my 3 contracts.

I flew in from the Philippines and negotiated that they pay two return tickets -- one for me and one for my wife. I reasoned that they would not spend any less to fly one person from North America. They actually wired me the cash to buy the tickets. It would have been easy to take the money and run but, gosh darn it all, I just couldnt live with myself. They never asked for the return portion of the tickets either. I think the total came to about 1.5 mil.

My first year, I flew over on my own dollar to meet a few directors face-to-face and check out their schools and apartments. I got reimbursed for my round-trip ticket after I came back from the visa run. I would do it the same if I had to do it all over again for the first time.
