My wife just read an article about an incident last night near the Hamilton Hotel about 2 army guys shooting at people! Apparently, there was live ammo and blanks used. Anyone hear anything about this? No civilians were injured, but one of the army guys was shot in the shoulder by the Korean police..
WTH? |

If they're lucky they will get sent to Leavenworth (if you consider hard labor in a military prison as lucky).
IF they were off duty then (under the SOFA) it could very well be a long stretch in a Korean jail provided they don't get charged under the UCMJ for breach of standing orders first.

They used an air rifle - a BB/pellet gun. No blanks/live ammo.
This isn't the first time this has happened - Koreans have done this, generally kids or college students for a joke. Fortunately, the cops don't take it lightly and I'm sure these guys will get burned for it. |

Lots better than incarceration in an American civilian prison.

Well, they were off-duty so it's up to the Korean authorities to decide if Korea's going to prosecute them or if the US military can handle the case. Oh, and I believe the term you were looking for is lawful order or regulation, not standing orders.
The real question is what Korean laws, exactly, did these guys violate and are those laws they can get away with paying blood money to have it "just go away". From the nocut news link above, it looks like they're headed for the Korean Big House. |

The police did their job . They assessed the situation and delt with it. The police know that US soldiers have access to firearms. Brandishing and discharging a firearm (air rifle or not) in a crowded place could have caused a stampede of people trying to escape the area resulting in many injuries and deaths. |

Think that's a bit of an over exaggeration, Stan. My gf has been watching the news for over an hour at my place and said this was only mentioned it in passing. You would think a shooting here would be all over the news... but we should all know how this machine works. |

The thread title here is well at odds with what actually happened..
Seems like the cops (usually so vilified for their inaction on here) did a really good job..
There won't be too much fuss about this whole incident tho I suspect.
Luckily no 'civilians' were hurt.. |

Color me impressed by the cops' actions. I'm glad they actually did something.
If I recall, a similar thing happened in Gangnam about 6 months back. |
