We want you to be like martina and simon.....
What the heck does that even mean?
Dance around the room and be the cheesiest teacher I can possibly be? I had no idea those two had that much pull anyway.
How would you guys respond to that? |

Those two are an embarrassment. They walk around town like a circus side show.
Your employer, yes, probably wants you to come in dressed like a hipster with pink and neon green highlights, maybe a mohawk with thick rimmed black glasses and make goofy faces and "witty" juvenile comments.
Oh and how would I respond? I'd say that every teaching style is different and bring different things to the table. If they don't accept that, screw em. |

I think the main thing is they want you to be enthusiastic about everything Korean and at the same time geeky enough to make them feel superior. The same reason why Michael Aaronson., Isaac Durst and that Italian woman with the horrible voice are so popular here. |

. And even though they have both lived here for several years now and often interview Korean singers who don't speak English, neither of them have learned enough Korean to ask even simple questions in Korean during their interviews. I guess it's good they've found a way to be somewhat successful, but I can't say I have much respect for them at all. |
I didn't know that about Martina and Simon but now I do I actually respect them a little bit more. |

Absolutely. Do the job that you were hired to do to the best of your abilities. If the school want somebody "like Martina and Simon," then that's the recruiter's responsibility. Not yours. |

lol, i dyed my hair red/orange and was told I should dye it back to black (my hair is brown) to look more Korean. Dont worry man, just do as you want.
Everyone has an opinion, and Koreans just say it all the time. Make sure you have an opinion too! One big thing Korea did to me was to make me realize who I was. Man, ive been told I was everything under the sun and the opposite, sometimes the same day! ha
I was just watching their video. Hey, thats cool too. Shows theyre some different foreigners living here.
Your CT probably said that because you know in Korea, you NEVER do anything but be positive about Korea (in your workplace) |

I reckon that Simon guy is a homosexual. I know he's married but I think they will eventually divorce after he comes out.
The other guys look like clowns, but at least that Isac guy is making money. Has anyone ever met any of these guys? I used to see Simon and Martina round my neighbourhood but I never said hi because I thought they sucked. |

You respect them more for not learning Korean even though it would help them do their work better and connect more closely with the celebrities they supposedly are fans of and want to learn about? Aren't you a language teacher, Edward? Don't you think people should learn a language if they have sufficient cause to do so? Isn't you wife Korean? I always get a feeling from your posts that you think you think Korea and her language is too beneath you for you to bother learning much about either, that because you come from a Western nation you and other Westerners do not need to learn this "little language" that is Korean. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, Korea is not as developed as most Western nations and it's true that a lot of Koreans want to learn English. Nevertheless, Korea is a member of the OECD and has one of the largest economies in the world. And, considering that most Koreans don't speak English, I would think that if your chosen career path involves talking to Koreans who cannot speak English, you'd, I dunno, bother to learn more Korean. Especially if you purport to love Korean culture as much as Martina and Simon do. |
I respect them more because they did things on their terms and still became 'successful' here. Instead of following the endless preaching from people like you about the necessity to kow tow to Korean culture and fit in. And will you stop bringing my wife into things, that's the second time you've done it. |

It isn't kow towing. It's using the system to your advantage. By not speaking Korean, you are weaker. Period. You HAVE TO rely on translators and others to help you, much a like a child relying on his parents. And have you seen their videos? Martina and Simon, as far as I can tell, seem to really like Korean culture and make more effort than the average Westerners to understand it and fit in to it. But by not properly learning Korean... well, they're just kind of superficial. They look the part as K-Pop lovers, but they actually don't understand the culture, songs, or people they interview fully since they don't understand that which K-Pop is largely predicated upon, the Korean language.
To me, it's like a doctor who hasn't properly studied anatomy. She can identify certain body parts and can make it seem like she knows what she's talking about, but in reality she is as clueless about the workings of the human body as the average Joe. Martina and Simon purport to be Korean culture experts, but without knowing Korean, they simply cannot be. They are, in a way, charlatans, and I can't help but wonder how being able to function in the Korean language environment they often find themselves in would benefit them and their career.
As for mentioning your wife, I think that's at least somewhat relevant to this point, unlike your tendency to bring up my tax payments where it is not at all relevant to the topic being discussed, so I thought it would be appropriate to mimic your style of writing. But if you want me to refrain from mentioning Mrs. Edwardcatflap, I will respect your request. |

Every time you bring up the subject of how much money you personally make, I will call you out on not paying your fair share of taxes. Every time I talk about my personal issues with learning Korean feel free to mention my wife. Deal? |
